Super Soaker method for promoting curl clumps - image super-soaker-curl-clump on https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com

The super soaker is a method I found as I was reading through the NaturallyCurly forums. I thought I would share it with you guys. The Super Soaker method helps promote clumps much like the Squish to Condish method. And there are many other similarities too between the methods. Let’s get started 🙂

Just like the Squish to Condish, the Super Soaker method emphasizes on optimal hydration as the best secret to achieve juicy curl clumps.

The main(and perhaps only) difference between Squish to Condish and Super Soaker is that Squish to Condish is a method of applying(or rather rinsing out) conditioner DURING hair wash, while the Super Soaker is a method to apply styling products and leave ins AFTER your wash.

The Super Soaker method – How to

1) After conditioning hair, apply your favourite styling products to your hair in sections by running your fingers through them.

2) Comb your hair well with a wide toothed comb to distribute the product.

3) Lean over a wash basin or in front of a tap in your bathroom with your head flipped, and much like the Squish to Condish method, collect water in your palms and scrunch your hair.

4) Repeat till all sections of your hair are thoroughly soaked and dripping; or should I say superbly soaked *wink wink*.

5) Now if you apply mousse or gel, scrunch that in and use a cotton tee to scrunch out excess water.

6) Proceed to dry your hair.

The principle is that though raking (running fingers through hair) pulls the curls apart, it helps in even product distribution. And then when you super soak your hair following the raking, the water and product will work together to redo curl clumping.

Hey Anjana,
Have you tried this method? Just a doubt, wouldnt’t the product get washed out when you scrunch in with water? When we do squish to condish, the aim is to rinse out the conditioner. so wouldnt this do the same?

Yes Swathi I have. Just like with squish to condish, this method will push the products in and will leave you with the amount required, not too much neither too less. That is why you should not skimp on the product.

So how much leave in conditioner do you usually use?

As much so as to soak all the hair clumps

Thank u 🙂 I am trying to follow your routine. I get curls…but its still frizzy. I use OGX curling cream and applying a teeny bit of almond oil over it. Then I did the super soaker method and followed it up with enliven gel. The curls look good till my hair is drying. Once its dry it becomes frizzy. Any suggestions?

How do you dry you hair?

I use a t shirt and plop.

How much cream do you use? Also, the raking may not suit everyone. So I suggest you use the scrunching method to apply products instead of the super soaker. For that your hair has to be very wet before you apply products. Try that and let me know.

I use around a 2 coin size amount. I will try your suggestion and see. Will let you know how it works out. Thank you soo much 🙂

Hey Anjana,

So today I followed your advice. I didn’t rake my hair, just scrunched the products in my hair and didn’t do super soaker. Also, I increased the quantity of the cream and the gel used. And it worked like magic. 🙂 I got pretty pretty curls and almost no frizz. I am sooo happy. Thank you sooo much :*

That is great Swati! Thanks for letting me know 🙂

Hi I landed on your blog accidently and I must say it was a happy accident. I am trying to play with curls but experiencing lots of frizz once hair dries. What should I do? I sometimes feel the products are making hair very brittle. And I am particularly struggling with refreshing curls. Is there a video on that as well?

Hey Shubhi, do you have a hair routine? And what products do you use? I don’t have a video on refreshing yet because I am still learning.

Hello Anjana..I have the similar problem as Shubhi. I am also experiencing a lot of Frizz and the products make my hair brittle. I have LP hair and live in high humidity. I recently followed your advice and started following the STC method. Using the Loreal smooth intense conditioner, Deva Curl B’leave in and Deva Curl Gel. On first day, it looks Okayish but from day2 my hair has lost definition, looks frizzy, also dry and brittle!! And going 2-3 days without washing makes my super itchy :((. I am clueless !! Please help. Do you think the I shd try the super soaker? And shd i rake or use the praying hands method?

Mail me some pics of your hair and paste this comment as the content

Holy good hair day, Batman! This has finally allowed me to have big bouncy curls! My length and curl pattern are similar to yours and I tried this last night. I plopped overnight and woke up to amazing, bouncy, shiny curls! Thank you so much for this. I especially like your video where you show how you wash and do all the steps of your routine. You’re so helpful!

So great to hear that!

Hi,
So I am trying to get my hair to be clumped but still have volume.
Any tips?
My hair is a little curlier than yours but not very thick. It is to my bra strap and meduim thickness.
I usually squish to condish and then apply Shea Moisture Curl Smoothie and gel, plop and then air dry. i have never dyed or straightened my hair.
Thank you!

Try skipping the cream, use only a gel. And fluff hair from roots once fully dry.

Hi, I am following CGM for about 2 months. When my hair is wet there are enough clumps, But the hair is becomng dry looking and kind of limp once the cast is being broken by SOTC. I am using Tresseme botanique conditioner, NYM yellow leave in, followed by LA looks Yellow gel/ Eco styler olive oil gel. I am feeling so disheartened 🙁 Can you please help me?

I have wavy dry hair with oily scalp. Will CG method help me. If so, what products would you suggest?
