I remember I was on the lookout for some good gels to give my curls hold. And as expected, most of the good ones were either not available easily in India or were pricey. That’s when I came across this wonder gel recipe on a curly hair forum – flaxseed gel is cheap, easy to make, and provides good hold to curly hair.

Flaxseeds are rich in fatty acids (Omega 3 and 6) that make hair healthier. Flaxseed gel (FSG) enhances curls for bounce and definition.  Though it is generally said to not have good hold, I find that my hair stays good for at least 8 hours without being weighed down. Flaxseed gel is not sticky like store bought gels. Instead of being drying, it moisturizes hair. And it smells really nutty and earthy. A total winner!

Ingredients for flaxseed gel

flaxseed gel curly hair (2)

(The below quantity produces enough gel for my hair type/length for 2 applications)

1/4 cup of flaxseeds (I use brown flaxseeds) –  You can buy organic flax seeds here.

2 cups of water

(Yes that’s pretty much it!)

Directions to make flaxseed gel for curly hair

(You can soak the seeds overnight for more hold but that is totally optional. I never do it – I am lazy :P)

flaxseed gel curly hair (3)

  1. Place the water and flaxseeds in a pan on a stove at medium-high. Keep stirring once in a while to prevent the seeds from sticking to the pan.
  1. Once it starts boiling, you will notice white froth coming up to the top soon. The consistency will change from watery to jelly like and thick (almost like egg whites).
  1. Test the consistency with your ladle – As soon as it stops dripping like water and starts flowing like a gel (a thin string or thread of gel should flow), you can turn off the heat.

It might look a bit runnier than store bought gels, but as soon as it cools down it will thicken further. The whole process takes about 10 minutes. DO NOT boil the seeds for too long as the gel will become very thick and make it hard to apply on hair.

  1. Strain this with a sturdy strainer (preferably a steel one) and keep stirring the seeds in the strainer to push out more gel.
  1. Optional: You can also mix your favourite oils or aloe vera gel into the flaxseed gel while it is still hot.

Without any preservatives, this flaxseed gel will stay in the fridge for two weeks. Some people also reuse the seeds for a second batch of gel. I’ve tried it and it gives poor hold so I ditch the seeds after 1 batch.

How to apply flaxseed gel on curly hair

Flaxseed gel has got a slimy i-will-escape-from-your hands texture and so you can whip it with an immersion blender. But I’ve noticed that with use, you get accustomed to this texture. Even then, it is advisable to apply the gel over an old cloth to prevent a mess.

After washing your hair, apply the gel to wet hair by raking it in (using fingers to run through hair) on. Use more flaxseed gel then you think you should. Your hair should feel completely saturated and slimy. If you use too little gel, the product will be not effective.

Flaxseed gel will make your hair really really wet. So your drying time may be longer than normal. Plopping after this is a good idea to speed up drying. After the hair has completely dried, scrunch out the crunch(hardness) to reveal soft curls. Read how to scrunch out the crunch here – Curly hair gels : Everything you need to know

Should it be applied in wet or dry hair

Remya, it should be applied to wet hair. Almost all products are most effective when applied to wet hair.

Sheetal (Halo of Books)

Yes ! I have read about flax seed gel.. seems easy to make … and effective too 🙂

Ya totally !

I have tried this, but I guess I was using too little. I also wanted to ask you something. Is there some sort of a whitish residue on the hair once it dries up? I noticed it once or twice.

Ya you need to use a LOT of flaxseed gel.
Ya some days I’ve also noticed the whitish residue(after scrunching out the crunch). Strange.

Hi, I think I know what the problem is. If you take too much of the gel & apply, it just clumps and the whitish residue forms as it dries. But if you take a couple of pumps and coat you palm evenly by rubbing and then apply on to your hair, you should not have the problem. When I started with the FSG, I noticed the whitish residue at my office, I was so disgusted that I just wanted to run to the shower, phew. Anyway, try this and let me know.

Thanks for the suggestion! I will try this. 🙂

Add a 1 or 2 teaspoons of your favorite oil.

Okay, first of all, i am soooooooooo thankful to you Anjana 🙂 and sorry for posting something or the other on all your posts 😜 All my life, my hair had been looking dry and lifeless like a broom, but after following all your posts and tips, my hair is starting to look muchhh better . . Initially I had used a truckload of bobbypins to hold my frizzy hair down and now it has come to none 😱💃🏻 So, I really dont have the patience or time to try this with a 4 month baby at home 😭😭 So, can you pleaseeee let me know your thoughts on the Giovanni organic LA Natural styling gel ? 😊 Pleeeeese ☺️ *sorry for the longgg comment* 😥

Najma, I looovvee hearing from readers and I looove long comments so keep commenting 🙂
I am happy the blog has helped you!
About the gel, I haven’t used it – But I have read good reviews about it. So if it helps keeping your hair good, you can use it 🙂

Okay Anjana 😊 Will try it out & let you know ☺️

Hi Anjana,
Thank you for all your posts. I have fallen in love with my curls after reading your posts and your suggestions have really helped me maintain them better. 🙂 🙂

Does this gel act like a leave-in conditioner? Or do i need to wash my hair after applying it?
Lately, i am getting a lot of dandruff and my scalp starts itching the second day from hairwash. Could you please recommend a good shampoo or home made treatment for the same?
If i don’t wash my hair the second day, my scalp starts itching a lot and if i do my hair look really dry and frizzy.

Thanks, GK

That’s great to hear! The purpose of a gel is to protect your hair from external factors while it is drying and also to provide hold while it is drying so that your hair looks defined and frizz free once it is dry. So you shouldn’t wash it off. For the dandruff, wash once a week with https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/the-body-shop-ginger-anti-dandruff-shampoo-review/ for 1 month. After that wash once in 2 weeks for the next month and later you can just use it once a month. Rub your scalp well using fingertips(not nails) to lift off the flakes. For regular washing, try cowashing(https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/co-washing-curly-hair/). Increasing omega 3 in your diet also helps dandruff.

Thanks Anjana, i will give it a try 🙂

Also, could you recommend a good shampoo/conditioner or hair care routine for thin curly hair ? I have been noticing my hair getting thinner day by day and is making me worry now.

Also, do you applying a serum the second day after hairwash? That’s when my hair start getting extremely dry/frizzy.

The routine is same for fine or thick hair. If your hair thinning looks very problematic, you should consult a doctor to check for any underlying issues. Applying serum on dry hair will not do anything – what you can do is spray water from a spray bottle onto 2nd day hair and then apply serum.

Hi Anjana,

When should you wash your hair after applying the flaxseed gel? Does the hair become stiff after some 8 hours on applying this?

Remya, flaxseed gel is a styling product to give definition to curls after washing your hair. After applying the gel wait till your hair is completely dry, then scrunch your hair (scrunch out the crunch) so that the stiffness goes and you get soft defined curls.

Thanks Anjana. Will try that way. My hair is way too curly. Doesn’t using these chemicals, everyday affect the hair

Which chemicals Remya?

I meant the sprays and gels do contain chemicals.

Not all chemicals are bad. Avoid alcohols which can be very drying to hair.

A perfect home gel for curl hair loved it

First timer here. Made FSG with your recipe. I just loved it. And thanks a million for that. But i just did not know what to do with my second day hair. Reapplying didn’t help with the frizz at all. Could you share your thoughts. TIA.

Hey! You should always apply water before applying any products even if it is on day 1, 2 or 3. Use a spray bottle to dampen hair and then apply the gel. A post on refreshing is long due I guess 😐

Great. Thanks. I’ll try that 😃

Hi Anjana my question is can I use flex seed gel if my hair is STRAIGHT I have no curls what so ever even when I wash I don’t get curls So can I still use FSG?
Thank You

Hey Denise, what is your purpose of using flaxseed gel on your hair?

Hi Anjana,

So if I am travelling and I need to carry FSG then what’s the option?

You could carry it in a leakproof container and use it within 1 or 2 days

Hi Curly Gorgeous ,

I tried this flax seed gel, it awesome it defines my curls – but in my 5 times of applications – twice i had a white flakes on my hair …. once pointed by colleague in my office … could you please guide.

Hehe hi 🙂 Add a leave in before the gel

What about chia seeds… They make a jelly..

I haven’t tried it but it’s worth a try 🙂

Thnx a lot di. Really ur flex gel worked as miracle on my hair. Mne YouTube pr pta nhi kitne videos dekh kr pta nhi kya kya use kiya h pr aapka ye gel to superb h di. Isse sch me hi bhot pyare curls aay h mere thnx again.

🙂

Hi anjana, how is hold by this gel when compared to the store bought gels.
How long does it stay. Does the hair become frizzy the second day…?

Quite less hold, you would need to add more on day 2

Hey after applying the gel how long we are supposed to keep……. n should we rinse after a while or just leave it in hair like a gel ??

You shouldn’t rinse it out.

Hi Anjana…
I was just going through the post again and see that you rake the gel in… Did you try your regular STC method with FSG. If yes, did that work? And also please tell how are the results comparing both methods of application.

My usual scrunching method doesn’t work with FSG because of how much quantity OF FSG needs to be applied compared to store bought products.

Good info. How many times in a week?

This is not a mask, it is a gel to be used like any other gel

Thanks for the recipe Anjana. This gel is magical. It makes my hair feel really soft and makes them look more defined and voluminous.I would definately add alovera gel next time.
Few questions though. Can I add something in this gel tomake it’s hold stronger? Also does flaxseed enhances hair growth?

I am not aware of any such ingredient Pragya. No it doesn’t enhance growth

Hi Anjana,
I have a straight amd frizzy hair. So applying this gel on my hair will make any sense????

Most likely not

I though I had straight but frizzy hair, so I used to always straigten them (smoothing or keratin).. turns out I have light wavy hair. The flaxseed gel totaly worked,.
wash & condition as usual. Apply gel to damp hair & brush to form hair clumps, then start crunching to form waves. Air dry or diffuse. I diffuse dry coz I don’t like having wet scalp and now I’m no longer going to straighten my hair anymore.

Hi….I have very curly coarse hair with some worry Grey’s that I’m trying to grow in…..what would you suggest to put on my hair for the coarse Grey’s before I put the flax gel on and still keep curl?

Hey Kay, why do you want to treat the greys different from the rest of your hair?

I have really long hair. But there are short Grey’s growing in and they stick out straight when I put my hair up ….I’m gonna put it up for my son’s wedding…any suggestions on how to deal with the short worry Grey’s that stick out?

Kay, you could use a wax or pomade to stick them down

Ok, thanks do you know if any good pomades or spray waxes that you could recommend?

Devacurl and Mixed chicks have pomades

Hi Anjana

I tried making flaxseed gel, the consistency was perfect except in the end I couldn’t filter the gel out. Strainer didn’t work nor did I thin cloth. Is there any other way to filter it out?

Thank you
Samhita

Looks like maybe it got too thick

Can I apply the flaxseed gel on my washed hair without applying any curling cream ? Is there any problem if I did that ?

There’s no problem at all

[…] hair gel has a consistency of egg whites: Anjana from Curls And Beauty Diary descibes it as ‘slimy i-will-escape-from-your hands texture‘. Quince seed hair gel is more gel-like and therefore easier to apply than flaxseed hair […]

Hello Anjana..so I tried this gel for the first time today and it gave more definition and shine but not that a strong hold maybe coz I used lesser than it is needed. (I generally use lesser wen i start a new product and then gradually build on more quantity as needed) But my doubt is I read that it has to be applied by raking but just wondering after doing the conditioning and leave in with the scrunching method if we rake the gel in will not disturb the curl pattern that is formed? Or should I rake the gel in and then scrunch again? Today I had applied using praying method and coz its not thick like store bought it was not easy applying that way. So what do you suggest?

This is the only gel that I always rake in and then follow it up with scrunching. Also this doesn’t provide as much hold as conventional hold gels.

When you said soak over night is this in place of cooking or additional to get more out of the seeds?

Additional step 🙂

Thank you

Thank you so much for this post and this blog. It is really lovely – I like how this gel is extremely affordable. I’ve tried this out, and I’ve noticed that the water tends to clog after I wash it off. Is there a way to prevent the gel from clogging the drain?

I am glad, Lakshmi 🙂 I haven’t faced such an issue – you could try pouring hot water

Hi Annana,
Will it work for hair growth and my hair is straight. Can I use it.will it make my hair curly😕

No and No, Mounika 🙂

Hey Anjana
So I used the FSG for the first time and it made my hair feels dry and crunchy after it had dried completely. What should I do to get this crunch out of my hair?

Scrunch out the crunch 🙂 Check this post for details https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/curly-hair-gels-everything-you-need-to-know/

Hi Anjana thus is Sanjana from Hyderabad 😊 my hair fell flat in two hours after using flaxseed gel.. I have naturally fine wavy and extremely frizzy hair… I cannot put a lot of products on my hair cuz it will just fall flat! My current method is shampoo. Covditing and gel !! My scalp gets oily the second day so I’ve no choice but to wash every alternate day so the co wash doesn’t help instead produces more oil

I mean I shampoo , condition and apply flaxseed gel which did not hold my curls up for more than two hours

Hi Sanjana, did you use any other products? FSG is very unlikely to weigh down hair

Not the gel but any other product will weigh my hair down, and flash seed gel just doesn’t hold the curls

Don’t use other creams, use only a hard hold gel. Check this for recommendations https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/beginner-friendly-simple-curly-hair-starter-kit/

Hi Anjana, I am 44 and just discovered the curly girl (woman!) method and flax seed gel a few weeks back. It suits my needs – its easy ,no fuss, can be done at home by myself without spending a ton of money on products or salons. It was a huge paradigm shift. Ihave a question for you amd others – does anyone get a headache with the flax seed gel? I experienced tue two times I used the gel but am not sure if I had it because of some unrelated cause.

I haven’t heard of FSG causing headaches Rema

THANK YOU! for sharing this gel ❤ my 11 year old has afro type hair but very tangly/fuzzy and matts soon as it dries in 2mins. I tried this gel out and its amazingly soft and no fuzz or matting happening, THANK YOU so much!!8ve wasted heaps of $$$ on products and nothing came close to this outcome.

Glad to hear that, Irinna!

The gel takes so much time to dry on hair
How to dry it immediately without waiting it to dry itself

Unfortunately, that is a con with this gel. If you use too less to speed up drying time, you may not get the desired results.
