Body Shop Ginger Anti Dandruff Shampoo review

I first came across The Body Shop Ginger Anti Dandruff Shampoo when I was drooling and walking through the aisles of a TBS store. I usually pick up butters and EDTs and this time decided to pick this one up instead. Almost 6 bottles later, I am still not bored of it (I get bored of beauty products very fast :|).

Description by The Body Shop: The Body Shop Ginger Anti Dandruff Shampoo is a Flake-clearing, scalp-soothing shampoo, with refreshing ginger extract.

Price: INR 795/15$/12 GBP for 250ml. You can buy it here, here (India) or here (US).

Ingredient Analysis:

Aqua – Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamide DEA, Cocamidopropyl Betaine – Surfactants, Sodium Chloride – Viscosity Modifier, Polysorbate 20 – Emulsifier, Piroctone Olamine – Antidandruff Agent, Panthenol, Dimethicone Propyl PG-Betaine, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Salix Alba Bark Extract (white willow) – Conditioning Agents, Propylene Glycol, Glycerin – Humectants, Mel, Zingiber Officinalis Root Extract (ginger), Evernia Prunastri Extract (oak moss) – Natural Additives, Citric Acid – pH Adjuster, Disodium EDTA – Chelating Agent, Linalool, Limonene, Betula Alba Bark Extract, Citral, Citronellol – Fragrances, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Salicylate, Methylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Benzyl Alcohol – Preservatives

Piroctone Olamine is as effective as the most common anti-dandruff agent zinc pyrithione. Sodium Laureth Sulfate is the 2nd ingredient implying the shampoo is quite harsh on hair.

CG Friendly: No. But it can be used for clarifying since it has no silicones.
Texture: The shampoo is quite runny, light, transparent and slightly brown coloured.
Smell: This is one of the best smelling shampoos ever. Ginger in a shampoo doesn’t sound very appealing. But this one is a sweet smelling gingerly smell that makes for a very refreshing wash.
Packaging: The usual fat plastic bottle of TBS with a flip cap.

Performance:

This is how I shampoo my hair – How to wash & condition curly hair and here is a post with my full curly hair care routine – My curly hair routine .

+ A small amount is enough and it lathers very well

+ It cleans every bit of dirt, oil and sweat from hair

+ It clears dandruff from the very first wash itself

+ It removes almost all the traces of dandruff with 4-5 washes

+ One of the most effective anti-dandruff shampoos that I have used

– Makes hair quite dry & rough – detangling after applying this shampoo takes more time & effort. And this has to be followed with an ultra-rich conditioner to combat the dryness.

In short:

Though it makes hair dry, the dryness can be countered with a good conditioner. For its effectiveness against dandruff and its refreshing smell, The Body Shop Ginger Anti Dandruff Shampoo still remains one of my favourite anti-dandruff shampoos. Here a List of curly hair products in India

I have used many bottles of this couple of years back when I had dandruff problems and it worked very well, but it does make hair dry so I use a good conditioner after shampooing

Yes Preethy, exactly my situation as well 🙂

The best I have ever used is the GKhair anti-dandruff shampoo to banish the pesky white flakes from my hair and it successfully did it and I am very happy with it. Truly a good anti-dandruff shampoo. 🙂 <3

I will try it 🙂

Hello. I am a curly girly too and looking for a anti dandruff shampoo that is sulfate/silicone free..? Do you know of any?
Also, I love your website: it’s the 1st one I check if I want to buy any new product and I’m looking for trusty reviews. 🙂
Thanks!

Hi Kimaya, these are some sulphate & silicone free shampoos-
1.Jason Natural Dandruff Relief Shampoo
2.Avalon Organics Scalp Treatment Tea Tree Shampoo
3.WOW Anti Dandruff Shampoo
(I don’t know about the efficacy of the last 2 though because I haven’t tried them)

Hey..I have also the same question as Kamaya..My scalp gets oily with little flakes..And have curly hair..

Hi Harshi, you can check my previous comment. Also check this – Flaky Scalp – Dandruff, dry scalp or products? + Remedies

Hi!
What conditioner would you recommend to use along with it ?
Thank you!.

Hey anjana do u shampoo the same way (mix little shampoo with water) for clarifying / anti dandruff usage? Or apply directly to the scalp? I have this thing in my mind that to remove product build up & flakes, diluted shampoo won’t work. Pls share your thoughts. Thanks

I dilute all kinds of shampoo. But yes, if you have severe dandruff/buildup, undiluted is the way to go to prevent actives from getting diluted 🙂

Thank u Anjuna 😊

I’m surprised with this review. I have tried this shampoo only once and I hated it. I have curly hair (Type 3a), and dry scalp that flakes, so I’ve combated dandruff for years.
This shampoo was extremely harsh on my hair. It cleared the dandruff, but because it was drying, the dandruff seemed to come back with a vengence. And the damage to my hair was extreme. Do not even ask me about the hairfall, I feel like I lost a quarter of my volume by the time the bottle was halfway done, and then I simply just ditched it. Couple of my friends, one with straight hair had the same experience with this shampoo, we collectively threw out all our bottles.
It took a long time for my hair to recover from the damage this shampoo had done, and I lost my faith in Body Shop after this. I wouldn’t touch their hair-care range with a 50ft pole. Now I only stick to butters, and serums.

Err..isn’t that what I’ve mentioned too? That it’s very drying

ou’re right. I don’t mean to disregard what you said… simply sharing my experience. It did not really help with my dandruff and also led to hairfall. So I would not recommend it to anyone.

Oh got your point now. I thought you felt like I had no issues with it 🙂

Hi Anjana, I have been following ur cg method.. And it’s awesome.. My curls are 3A. I wanted to try bodyshop ginger shampoo.. Can u tell me if enliven conditioner will go with this shampoo?? Bcoz I have got used to enliven conditioner n liked my curl pattern n Don wanna change my conditioner.. Pls suggest.

Satwika, I don’t understand what you mean by will it go with the shampoo? Conditioners are generally used with multiple shampoos.

Hi Anjana, I meant can I use enliven conditioner after I wash my hair with body shop ginger shampoo as enliven conditioner is silicone free.
