Once we start following a curly hair routine, curlies become obsessed with moisture, hydration and gentle cleansers that we sometimes forget that we may have gone overboard.

Signs that your hair needs clarifying

  • Are your curls feeling weighed down and lacking bounce?
  • Are your regular products and routine not showing results anymore?
  • Do you use a lot of oils, silicones or butters in your hair?
  • Do your curls feel dull and lacking shine like they have some coating on them?
  • Do you feel like your curls are dry and water doesn’t penetrate them easily?
  • Do you only cowash and never shampoo?
  • Are you low porosity?
  • Do you have loose curls or waves?

If you said yes to any of these, then you most likely have buildup. Buildup is the gradual accumulation of certain ingredients on your hair that prevents water or products from entering hair.

Before and After Clarifying

Ingredients that can build up on hair:

  • Silicones
  • Oils
  • Butters
  • Mineral oil
  • Petrolatum
  • Waxes
  • Chlorine
  • Hard water Minerals– You need a chelating shampoo with ingredients like Disodium EDTA and Tetrasodium EDTA. But note that many shampoos have these ingredients towards the end of the list as preservatives. They are very low in concertation and will not remove minerals. Look for shampoos dedicated to hard water removal.
  • The Surprise ingredients – Cationic surfactants and Cationic polymers like Behentrimonium chloride and Cetrimonium chloride (yes, the amazing frizz fighters in our lovable conditioners) & Polyquaterniums. Most of these are not water soluble, but still they are not avoided in a CG routine because they’re bonding to your hair thereby laying down your cuticles (aka frizz control). What happens in the case of buildup is that they bond beyond what is required, causing extreme mushy and over moisturized hair. The best ingredient to build cationic build up is C14-16 olefin sulfonate.

When should you clarify?

  • It’s a good idea to keep a fixed routine – something like once or twice a month is an average number that works for most curlies so that you don’t have to wait for your hair to start acting strange before working on it.
  • Clarify if you notice any of the above mentioned symptoms.
  • Clarify before doing a protein treatment.

What about ACV, baking soda and clay washes to clarify?

ACV can remove hard water minerals to some extent but at the pH at which it does, it can be very damaging to hair. Both ACV and Baking Soda don’t remove oil, silicones, waxes or butters. Also baking soda is highly alkaline and can be more damaging than the sulphate shampoos that you are scared of. Just because it is natural, doesn’t mean it is good.

Clays like rhassoul or bentonite remove oils aggressively and so are good for degreasing and can also remove milder build up, but they don’t remove other kinds of build up like silicones or cationic build up.

Types of shampoos to use

1) Clarifying shampoo – Removes general build up like oil, waxes, silicones etc. Any sulphate shampoo, without the above mentioned build up causing ingredients can be used as a clarifying shampoo.

2) Clarifying shampoo with C14-16 olefin sulfonate – Removes cationic buildup got from your conditioners and styling products. Also removes silicones and oil so it is a good idea to use this.

3) Chelating shampoo – Removes hard water build up.

A note to swimmers – It’s best to prevent chlorine damage, because once chlorine touches hair, it immediately starts causing damage. So instead of looking for a swimmers shampoo, it’s best to drench your hair with conditioner before stepping into the pool. This way, your hair is protected from the chlorine.

Nice article Anjana..
Which clarifying shampoo did you use here?

HairPrint Chelating Shampoo and OGX Coconut Water shampoo

Very informative post Anjana. Your write ups are full of information, yet ‘to the point’, so quite interesting to read.
I really love your writing style. You are putting up great effort. I dont have curly hair, still i like to read your posts and very much enjoy seeing your pics 🙂 My little daughter has curly hair though, thats how i stumbled up on your blog, but got hooked to it for my interest 😉 Great going. Love 🙂

I am so glad to hear that Asmi 🙂 Thanks for making me smile

When you clarify, do you wash just the roots or the whole length of your hair?

The whole length as build up happens on the hair as well

How can I remove oil from my hair during wash? Does oiling hair before wash cause any damage?

Omg, look at the difference between the before and afters! I use silicones regularly in my routine and I clarify from time to time using a cheap sulfate shampoo from Pantene or Dove or Tresemme. I always follow up clarifying with a nice deep conditioning treatment using heat, very preferably a deep conditioner without silicones.

Yes 🙂

Hi Anjana!

May I know how do you clarify your hair and what shampoo do you use? Thank you

This whole post is on that 🙂

Haha 😂. Sorry. What I mean was what is your go to clarifying shampoo that you are using now?

I rotate between the ones mentioned depending on what build up I want to remove

Hey Anjana,

How are you I am from Bangalore and i also moved to Amsterdam 6 months ago. I can say i have a type 2c kinda wavy hair. After coming here, my hair sort of feels dry and unmanageable. I am also facing hair loss issues and my hair just doesn’t seem to grow 🙁
1) I wanted to buy Kerastase products – shampoo, conditioner – which ones do you recommend?
2) I also use loreal serum after hair wash – is that ok?
3) As per your routine, after washing your conditioner, you apply conditioner again and leave it in right? Is that the same conditioner or another leave in one?
4) after shampoo, conditioner, leave in one and then mask , gel? Can you kindly recommend the products?

Thanks,
Deepthi

I don’t recommend Kerastase products. There are much better brands that you can buy here for curly hair. Checkout brands like devacurl, bouncecurl, kinkycurly etc.
It’s the same conditioner. You can also use a leave in instead of that.

Hi Anjana, every 3rd day i feel i have to clarify. 🤐

Without clarifying i feel my hair routine is not complete. I just cant accept the sulphate free shampoos 🙁

You can continue that till you are comfortable using sulphate shampoos, Priya 🙂 There are no hard and fast rules. You do you 🙂

Hey Anjana,
Is the enliven coconut and vanilla shampoo good for clarifying? Tried to make sure of the ingredients, but still couldn’t figure out. Please let me know? Have a bottle of it lying around, and would prefer not to throw it away if I can use it.
I have 2a-2c wavy hair, BTW. So I clarify on every main wash day.

Yes Gazal 🙂

Hi Anjana,
Do you think Arata shampoo is good for clarifying?

Hi Debora, I’ve reviewed it here https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/arata-hair-products-review-shampoo-conditioner-hair-gel-hair-cream/
As I mention in it, it doesn’t seem to have any clarifying ingredients even though it is very drying.

Hello! I have very fine type 2 wavy hair and am trying to find ways to get more volume because it gets weighed down easily. My leave in conditioner contains Shea Butter, do you think this could be weighing down my hair and causing buildup? Should I look for a more lightweight leave in?
I have only ever clarified my hair once in the past and I used Dawn Dish Soap. I know it sounds crazy, but I figured it contains the same ingredients as most regular sulfate shampoos, and it was surprisingly very gentle on my hair and didn’t dry it out too much after following it up with my normal conditioner. Do you think that using Dawn Dish Soap to regularly clarify my hair (maybe around once a month) would cause too much damage? Should I just invest in a real clarifying shampoo? Thanks!

Hi Gali, Yes, shea butter can weigh down hair. Look for lighter leave ins.
I am sorry I haven’t heard about Dawn Dish Soap.

Hi Anjana,

Can i use Body Shop Ginger SHampoo for clarifying?

Yes you can Binita

Hi!

How do I know if what my hair needs is clarifying or more protein?

Thanks in advance!

If in doubt, clarify 1st and see. If that doesn’t help, try protein in the next wash.

Please suggest a good shampoo for clarifying.

This post lists exactly that, did you not read it?

Anjana firstly thanks for introducing me to CGM secondly my scalp has this layer of waxy white substance and cg friendly shampoos don’t get rid of it unless I use a lot and scratch my scalp which leads to tangles and hairfall, I came to know that this is sebum and don’t need to be get rid of completely and since I’ve switched to sulphate free shampoos my scalp will adjust to it. I would really love to have your opinion on this.

Hi Asana, sebum is like a light oil, it is not white. Please consult a dermatologist.

Yes! That’s exactly how my scalp feels when I massage my scalp! Like I’ve applied a light oil on it… And my fingertips feel lightly waxy and shiny (yeah that much) cuz of the sebum and I misspoke l, it’s not white per se, like a greasy buildup, the kind you get after applying too much oil. And now that I’m not combing my hair, the sebum is not reaching my hair strands and just stuck on my scalp. Do you think cgm isn’t for me? Or how do one with oily scalp follow CGM?

Hi Asana, curly hair in itself works like that. Check this post – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/why-is-curly-hair-dry/

Hi Anjana,
