Silicones and curly hair - Why I love them - image Indian-Curly-hair-blog-6 on https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com

Once you start reading more and more about curly hair, one of the prevalent curl care methods you will come across is to avoid silicones completely. They are considered taboo in the curl community.

Update : 23 Jan, 2018 – I no longer use silicones because I figured they weigh my hair down.

In the days when I was trying to make sense out of my unruly frizzy hair, I sure did give this method a try, no doubt. I mean I was willing to try anything under the sun to tame my hair! So I went silicone free – which means you should avoid any product which contains silicones – CG Method and CG Friendly Products in India (Intermediate and Advanced Curly Hair Care). I tried the silicone free method for about a month or two before giving up. My current HG serum, conditioner and mask all contain silicones and I love them to bits! So what’s the deal really?

What are silicones?

Silicones are ingredients used in hair care products(mainly conditioners, serums and leave ins) that add shine to hair, provide slip during detangling, combat frizz by making the cuticle lay flat and condition the hair by forming a film on hair strands. They are the ingredients that end in “cone,” “col,” “conol” or “ane” for e.g.:- Trimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, dimethiconol.

Then why do curly girls avoid silicones?

Most silicones are not water-soluble and so they cause build-up on your hair. This build up may cause your hair to look dull and cause your curls to weigh down and lose definition.

How can silicone buildup be removed?

Use shampoos that have sulphates. Woopsie. Harsh sulphates dry out your poor curls and the curl community considers this ingredient more taboo than silicones. That’s a dreadful circle. But I use shampoos with sulphates in them *gasp* Yes I am guilty *hands on mouth*. Why I got back to sulphates – Curly hair. Because I use sulphates, I don’t have any issue of silicone build up.

Why wasn’t I happy with the silicone free method?

  • Detangling in the shower was a nightmare without the silicones. Silicones provide slip (i.e. they reduce the friction) which makes removing the knots and tangles very easy. And of course the buttery feeling when you touch your hair after rinsing off the conditioner 😀
  • After drying, my hair looked greasy not shiny. It looked like there was oil on it. That is not the look you want on your hair. I want my hair to look moisturized and glossy not greasy. Without silicones, sadly my hair did look oily.
  • Frizz and fly aways weren’t controlled at all. Silicones tame your hair’s cuticle and help hair strands clump together. In the absence of silicones my hair looked like an unruly mess.
  • Silicones protect my hair from humidity and prevent them from poofing up and frizzing.
  • They retain the moisturized look from wash day for a longer time.

Why didn’t the silicone free method work for me?

I mean it is THE curly girl method and apparently should have worked right?

Not all curly hair is the same – pattern, structure, porosity, thickness, health all vary from head to head. There are also external factors like your location, climate, working environment, humidity that determine your hair’s behaviour… or even your zodiac sign (just kidding :P).

You have got to experiment till you find what suits you the best. If you use a product with silicone and you are happy with the way your hair looks, don’t feel guilty that some people have labelled it a no-no ingredient. All my favourite curl care products have silicones! On the other hand if your hair doesn’t like silicones, listen to it.

I will continue experimenting with silicones, lighter silicones, no silicones, sulphates, less harsher ingredients, no sulphates and all other weird permutations & combinations and probably find something better later. Who knows?

You know your hair better than anyone. At the end of the day, YOU should be happy about YOUR hair.

This was an awesome read Anjana !!! I also heard that silicone based product is bad for hair but even I also experienced that silicone based product provides great look to my hair … Your article is an eye opener .. Thanks for sharing 🙂 😀

Thanks Sheetal!

I heard recently that silicones are bad, nasty, no-good ingredients, and where there might be some truth to that, for the past four days I’ve switched from my Organix Coconut milk products to As I Am Coconut Co-wash, and the results are mixed. On one hand, the co-wash makes my hair easy to detangle and I love how it’s helping to shape the curl however, there’s more frizz, and a few strands of hair have started to go limp. That never happened when I used Ogx, and it worries me. Maybe my hair can’t handle the switch; maybe my scalp is more itchy than it usually is because my head is in rebellion. I don’t know. But I do know that I dug out my Coconut Curls shampoo, Keratin Conditioner and Coconut Milk conditioner, and I’m going to give them another shot tomorrow. Ultimately, it’s my hair, I’m massaging my scalp every day to loosen the dirt build up, and I can go more days between washes when I don’t use the natural product (because my hair has awesome definition day two, three AND four with a little water crunch in the morning). Also, there’s a chance I’m allergic to every natural product with coconut in it (which didn’t happen with the Ogx coconut line).

Wow this is so great to hear Brandy! This is exactly my point..thanks a ton for sharing your thoughts on silicones 🙂

I agree with you Anjana. I recently started using Silk-n Shine serum by Hair & Care, and I ‘m loving it. It gives a good hold to my curls without making them crunchy. Initially, I too was skeptical about using it as it contains silicone, but the results are amazing 🙂

Happy New Year Gal 🙂 🙂

Happy new year to you too Vidya!!

Out of curiosity, I tried the silicone free method for a week. And guess what, my hair looked so dry and frizzy 😱 Backkk to silicones now 👀 now my curls are clumped together and defined 😊 Hmm, lesson learnt, “never trust every trend on the internet blindly” 😜

Haha true! Thanks for sharing this Najma 🙂

Reading some of your recent posts, I realized that you co-wash now (Enliven conditioner I guess). Do you still continue to use products with silicones even when you co-wash? Does it cause build up?

Good observation and question Preeti 🙂 I use a sulphate shampoo once in 2 weeks. So no question of build up 🙂

Thanks Anjana! I recently bought Tresemme flawless curls conditioner which my hair loves but it does have water insoluble silicones. Hence my question.

Hi Anjana, lately I’ve been dealing with itchy and flaky scalp..
I use head and shoulders shampoo, matrix biolage conditioner, cantu leave in and arata gel..
Is it product build up? Or has my scalp dried out? Just sooper confused

Totally agree…everyone’s hair is different.

When I first started working with curly hair, I did not want to believe the “rules” of the CGM.

Yet, most of the time, this is what I find…if someone is using a non-soluble silicone, the hair is more dry.

Since water is hydration…I never want to use anything that keeps the water out.

Interesting perspective. I always appreciate when a client tells me they love their Shea moisture product, Morrocon Oil, or other things I typically do not like on curly hair.

I did buy some silicone loaded QUAI today because I’m dying to try their products. Lol.

P.S. I think I’ve seen you on Instagram cuz your name looks familiar:)

Absolutely agree with you Atoya! Yes I have asked you a couple of hair queries on Instagram 🙂

I’m so glad to have found a curly girl who uses sulfates and silicones! I’ve tried the CG method and it didn’t make my hair look good at all! And when I went back to using Pantene my curls were defined and soft and a lot more manageable!

I just have one question, I’ve been wanting to try the Ogx Orchid Oil sulfate free shampoo (for color protection) and I know the conditioner has silicones in it, do you think I should using a sulfate shampoo with the conditioner or will the Ogx shampoo get the silicones out? I was wondering if using both Ogx shampoo and conditioner would work without causing build up. Thanks!

Hi Shakti! The shampoo contains Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate which is almost as harsh as a sulphate (Why some sulphate-free shampoos are harsh). It will remove silicones.

Thanks so much for the help Anjana! 🙂

Read this post now bcoz i really got fed up on internet reading no silicones blah blah and i dont even say they are wrong but right now i do nt want to try cg method. Actually the thing which confused me was i saw sumone comment on fb that when using CG method ur curls are more defined like if uh hv 2b it will look like 3a 3b etc etc but i dont know my heart says if Anjana uses silicones n sulfates i should too ignore CG. Thanks for ur post
P.S. already bookmarked it so that i read n read to avoid any confusion

Hi Kawal, hehe don’t ditch CG just because I don’t follow it completely. For some people, CG helps define their curls more. Either way, you can always ask any doubts you have 🙂

Ok but right now i m gonna follow ur routine n fav products

So happy I found this! Non silicone life is not working for my curly hair. I’ve wasted soooo much $$$ and time on CGM products. In the end causing more damage trying to fight the mess they created. I’m back to being a silicone believer again! Hoooooray!!! Agree and thanks for the info!
😃

Whatever suits you Alita 🙂 I am currently avoiding silicones because I figured they weigh my hair down

Weird question, but do you still “scrunch out the crunch” while using products with silicone? I have been wondering if the outcome would be terrible.

Hey Delilah, I’ve updated this article (check the start of the post) – I no longer use silicones

That’s odd. So now you are back to CG? I’m confused now. Do you not recommend silicones now?
Can you tell me which conditioner you used earlier and which one now?

Also from the comments above mentioned you wash your hair with sulphate shampoo only twice a week? So how do manage other wise? Just co washing is it? Can you tell me which product?

I don’t follow the CG strictly because I do use sulphate shampoos every now and then – maybe once in 2 weeks. For other washes I either use a sulphate free shampoo or co wash with Revlon Flex conditioner. I’ve used many conditioners earlier like Mythic Oil Masque, OGX Coconut Curls. Now I like Devacurl One Condition. I don’t condemn the use of silicones in any way. If your hair likes it continue to use it. I stopped because I realised my hair didn’t like it.

ah! that clarifies. thank you.

Hi anjana can you name some silicone shampoos and conditioners which I can buy

Like mentioned in the post, I don’t use them anymore

This is the post that made my day. The content is exactly what I was looking for.

You are just silly. Silicone is great on my hair. It does not wheigh down keeps the greese away. Why do you even post such BS?

Good for you. I used to love them too at a time. Everyone’s hair is different

Hi! I don’t know if you will see this but I want to thank you! I tried the CG method for 7.5 months. I was not happy. My hair wasn’t happy. I get there is a transition period but if that period is longer than what I was at, forget it lol. My hair didn’t like organic products. It looked dry. My hair would break. Even the styling products! I went back to sulfates and silicones and my hair is in love. I am flat ironing right now because it’s easier for numerous reasons. I think I’ll use a clarifying shampoo once a week for build up issues. I think I have hard water. My hair never felt clean using cg only products even after clarifying. I also think deep conditioning weighs down my hair. Now I do that with steam and a cap in the shower! I feel like I failed with the cg but my hair is wavy and thin. It didn’t react well to it. This colder weather is making my hair fall flat! Thank you again! You made me feel so much better about myself!

I am glad to hear that Marie. As long as one is happy 🙂

Interesting!

I’ve certainly had problems with my long, wavy/curly hair for years. It’s always been dry and matted. Just for an experiment a few weeks ago I put on silicone-rich deep conditioner every night. Yeah, damn. It made my hair look great, but it was also heavy as hell.

I’m not sure that was the answer.

Yet I’ve also tried the CG method. Using only approved products I found that my hair took forever to detangle in the shower! Seriously I spent an hour in there one time, and my hair just had so much breakage over the next few days. And I had thick mats, it was awful. And then I put on the silicones again and bang, mats gone.

That’s what I thought too Lucy, until I found some good CG conditioners like Devacurl that have great slip 🙂

Hi Anjana.. Nice post.. I am into cg method from 1 year i guess.. I have tried many shampoo and conditioners but my hair looks very very dry and dull and i am.thinking of introducing some silicone products back into my routine.. I have very dry and frizzy curly hair.. Could you please share a few shampoo and conditioners with and without silicone to manage my curls?
