8 curly hair care tips for winters - image curly-hair-care-for-winter on https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com

For the last few weeks I have been wondering why my curly hair is so dry, rough and flat in spite of using the good old curly hair products that I absolutely love and sticking to my tried & tested curly hair methods. I was thinking that my hair is probably too long now and the weight is causing my curls to act messy. Today suddenly out of the blue when I was applying hand cream to my dry parched hands (which I usually don’t), I realized that it’s because winter is here! How didn’t I think of that before? *silly me*. Dry winter air lacks the humidity to help curls stay soft and bouncy. Why so? When the air is cold, water condenses and so the air cannot hold moisture.

So I immediately decided to put up a winter hair care guide for curly hair (ya like we aren’t already dealing with dryness all through the rest of the year 🙁 Why is curly hair dry? ). Here goes: 8 curly hair care tips for winter.

1. Take cold and short showers

I know how tempting it is to just stand under a hot shower when it’s cold outside (guilty as charged!), but it can really dry out your hair and cause the cuticle to frizz. Try using tepid water so that you don’t have to face the below scenario 😛

taking bath in cold water

2. Pre-poo with oil

Before washing your hair, massage your hair with a good oil like coconut, almond, jojoba or olive. It will prevent your shampoo from drying out your hair too much and also provide a conditioning effect.

3. Use milder shampoos

Since you don’t sweat as much as during summers, try milder shampoos to see if they cleanse well. If they do, that’s another drying agent taken care of 🙂

4. Use butters and deep conditioners in place of your regular conditioners

They are richer and more hydrating and have a larger proportion of oils and cuticle taming agents.

5. Leave some conditioner on

Don’t rinse out your conditioner fully. Or you could also use a separate leave in conditioner after wash before applying your styling product. You conditioner acts perfectly well as a leave in too!

6. Now is the perfect time to try the products that caused your hair to look greasy in summer

Those products that caused your curly to look greasy during summer may be your life savior during winter! Bring them out of the cupboard.

7. Avoid humectants in your products

Ingredients like glycerin and panthenol will absorb moisture from your hair if the surrounding is dry (which it is during winter).

8. Drink plenty of water

Care begins from inside so don’t forget to provide hydration from within.

And of course it goes without saying that the other curly hair care basics are still to be followed. Here’s a post which sums up the basics – My curly hair regimen

Happy winter!!

Useful tips, Anjana 🙂

My hair is softer , more moisturised but flAt curls in winters. If i go by the above routine probably curls will totally flatten . Guide Pls

Hi Shilpa, this could be happening because the products are not lost into the air by evaporation causing your hair to get weighed down. Try using products with protein(read the ingredients). Also avoid too many leave ins and curl creams and serums and resort to just a good gel or mousse to hold the curls. Also, because it takes more time for the hair to dry, air drying can cause hair to be pulled down. Try diffusing.

I liked that you mentioned milder shampoos to clean your hair during the winter. My sister and I are looking for advice to keep our hair in good condition during the winter, and I’m helping her with information. I will let her know about your recommendations to take them into consideration during this season.
