My Curly Hair Routine

  • December 16, 2015

Though I have separate articles for what exactly I do with my curly hair, very often I am asked for “My curly hair routine”. So I thought of including all applicable curly hair articles under a single post so that you can easily look up what my curly hair routine looks like 🙂

1. Washing – Shampoo/Cowashing + Conditioning

Since curly hair is extremely dry, it is best to avoid washing your hair every day. You have to create a schedule that balances off sweat and grime on one hand and hydration on the other. What works best for my hair (with my daily gym visits) is washing every 2 or 3 days. I always wash my hair at night because it dries taking its own sweet time which gives me well defined curls the next morning. Here is the full post – How to wash & condition curly hair

Stick to gentle cleansers or cowashing  for most of your washes. Clarify your hair once in a while.

2. Applying products and scrunching

There was a time when I used to come out of the shower after washing & conditioning, tee dry my hair, stand straight and apply styling products(serums, leave ins) to my hair just like that. More than half the hair strands wouldn’t even get the product. Pooh. And the next morning, after my hair was dry, I would apply some more product because my curls didn’t look defined or hydrated. These are 2 bad practices that I stopped once I found out about scrunching. Read all about it here – How to apply products and scrunch curly hair

Summarising the above 2 steps, the order of applying curly hair products is Shampoo or Cowash -> Conditioner -> Leave in conditioner or Curl Cream -> Gel or Custard

3. Drying – Tee drying + Plopping

As most people around me, I also grew up drying my hair with a towel the usual way – rubbing the towel into the hair over and over till I made sure there was no water dripping from my head. After almost 20 years of commiting the mistake of ruining the curl definition and inducing a great amount of frizz, this is how I dry my curly hair – How to dry curly hair

4. Sleeping

You followed a perfect curly regimen to define and hydrate and form beautiful looking curls, only to find that it doesn’t look so great on the 2nd or 3rd day after a sleep. Not sleeping properly can crush your curls causing them to look flat and out of definition. During your sleep, your curls are squished and rubbed giving you frizz, fly aways and undefined curls. Here are 4 ways to sleep with curly hair – 4 ways to sleep with curly hair

brush or comb curly hair(2)

5. Never brush or comb curly hair once it is dry

There was a time when I used to brush the life out of my hair. It was also a joy to buy all the fancy brushes in different shapes, sizes and colors *girls*. Having read somewhere that brushing over and over again results in silky straight hair, it was a ‘joy’ I indulged in. And did it help me? Of course not. My hair still looked like hay. Once I learnt the dynamics of curly hair, I realized that this ruined my curls and that one shouldn’t brush or comb curly hair – Why you shouldn’t brush or comb curly hair

Here is a video of my curly hair routine.

6. Refreshing 2nd and 3rd day curly hair

Wash night is my favourite night with respect to curly hair care. My curls look bouncy and full of life the next morning. Oh how I wished they stayed that way for more than just a day! Since it is not possible to wash your hair every single day, we need to look at ways to refresh curly hair on the 2nd or even the 3rd day. Refreshing curly hair means getting back the bounce in them. Read the full post – 3 ways to refresh curly hair

7. Treatments

I do a protein treatment whenever I feel my hair needs it with gelatin. You can find out if your hair damaged and in need of proteins here. I also do deep conditioning treatments often – Deep Conditioning Curly Hair

Blog Comments

Nicely put Anjana … It is really helpful to all the curly hair girls 🙂 🙂

Thanks Sheetal 🙂

Thanks for this informative article Anjana!
I just have a small doubt – how does one decide whether to use a custard or a gel after washing one’s hair? Also, are leave-in conditioners necessary? Can we let normal conditioners stay in our hair instead of buying a special leave-in conditioner?

You can use your regular conditioner as leave in. Custard is mainly used for curl enhancement and may not have much hold.

Hi
I understood the whole cleaning process can you guide me on oiling after wash. How and when. I generally oil my hair towards the end of the day before sleeping and leave the oil in my hair till the next wash which is a week later. Plus what to do the next day, should I comb or not to let the curls be visible

Check these posts Meenakshi

Combing should never be done on dry hair if you want the curls to remain intact

Hi Anjana!!

It is so nice to see a co-blogger who blogs for the same reason – the love of Curls.. 🙂 You look beautiful and the curls add so much charm to it!! <3<3

I follow a totally different hair care regimen, but curls are what we both stand by!!

Loved your blog, you have a nice way of writing….Keep up the awesome work!! Hope we can inspire more and more beauties to fall in love with their curly or wavy hair!! 🙂

Cheers!!

Hey Divya!
Thanks for your lovely comment and your wonderful words 🙂 I will check out your blog!

Hey Anjana…so I just had some doubts…
1. My hair ends feel dry most of the time even after oils and wont curl properly
2. My 2nd day curls are never that great and then I have to soak them all over again (is there any other way to do that)
3. Do u have anything that you do that would help hair grow faster?

Hi Karen,
1) Do you have heat or chemical damage?
2) Have you seen this post https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/3-ways-refresh-curly-hair/
3)https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/7-ways-to-grow-healthy-hair/

Hi Anjana
I have a few doubts.
1.My mom tells me combing increases blood circulation. If I don’t use a comb, will my hair grow?
2. What are some of your everyday hairstyles ?
3. Do u still use hair oils before hair wash if so how long do u keep it?

Hi Ashly!
1. Blood circulation can be brought about by massage with fingertips also.
But if you want to use a comb, there is no problem in using comb before
your hairwash or during the wash. No combs after the hair has dried post
washing.
2. I normally leave my hair open, or tie a pony tail or put it up in a
messy bun(on day 3 mostly).
3. I use oils before shampooing only if I feel my hair is too dry or rough
(than what it normally is). I use coconut oil or olive oil and leave it on for about 30 mins to 1 hr.

I will write detailed posts on all these soon!

Hi Anjana, your posts are so much convincing. I too have curly hair and acne prone skin, so your post are very useful for me :). Thanks for such a beautiful blog. Keep posting !!

Thanks you so much Manisha! 🙂

Hi Anjana,
I have gone through the same hair care process which ended up making my hair very frizzy from young. It is amazing to come across your blog and know better how to look after my curls. My two daughters are so influenced by models that they want sleek straight hair whereas they have beautiful wavy hair. I want them to appreciate what they have. After reading your blog I am excited in trying out all the hair care regime. Where can I buy sheamoisture , Cantu products and all products you use? Can I buy them in India? Thanks a lot for all the information ….

Hi Sushma 🙂 I am glad you have decided to embrace your natural hair. Hope your girls do so too soon! I’ve linked where you can buy the products from in their respective reviews. Did you check them out?

Thanks Anjana !!! I will check them out ….

Hi anjana ,
Its been year since i started naturally curly hair journey . Recently found your blog and read all articles its really informative .I have doubt , after applying styling cream and gel can I wrap tee to dry or i should air dry my hairs. I first apply cream and gel then plop my hair with micro fiber towel, i think it takes out all moisture . Air drying takes lot of time .

Hi Vani! Plopping is great to decrease the drying time – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/plopping-plunking-curly-hair-5-benefits/ . You are doing it right.

Hi Anjana, lovely post! I’ll definitely try your methods and see if they work for me. Could you take a look at my curly hair dilemma post? I’m having some trouble with my curls and would love some advice! http://tanishajadehall.com/blog/2016/8/18/curly-hair-confessions

Thanks Tanisha. Here’s what I think :-
1. The natural curls are going to be less silkier than your processed hair for obvious reasons. Curly hair structure is like that. Make use of emollients like fatty alcohols and aloe gel that will soften hair and oils and butters like jojoba/argan/shea for sealing in the moisture and for shine.
2. I think you will be comfortable wearing your hair down after the big chop!
3. Here are 2 ways you can detangle your hair easily – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/2-ways-detangle-curly-hair-dry-wet-detangling/
4. Here’s a post for your humidity induced frizz – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/humidity-cause-frizz-6-fixes/
5. Do you pineapple your hair at night?

Hey,

What hairstyle would you recommend while working out?

Swathi, I usually put up a high pony(with a jaw clip) or a loose bun

hai anjana, whcich shampoo would be best for curly hair

Hey Ashvitha, Shampoos really don’t make much of a difference. You can use any that you like. It is the conditioner, styling products and more importantly your hair routine that matters 🙂

thanks a lot

Hi Anjana,

I just completely read your hair category from start to end and it was very very helpful. I have just started caring for my hair in little ways that i can and have already seen a huge difference.

I live in a area that has hard water :(.. so i cannot skip the shampoo too often.
Loreal Spiral Splendour cream works best for me, OGX Curl definition cream was a disappointment.
Going to try the Enliven conditioner for co-washing soon. As of now i use the Herbal Essence Hello Hydration. Do share any recommendations.

Looking forward to more posts to help the rest of us ‘Embrace our Curls’
Thank you for helping us fall in love with our hair.

Hey Alysaa! Thanks a lot for your wonderful comment 🙂 Made my day!

Hi! First time looking at your blog. I was looking for curly hair routines because I like to change it for the different seasons. I have to say, I’ve never seen a indian girl with curly hair and that’s awesome. Curly hair is the best. I love my curls!!

I have a blog called A Curly Mess…acurlymessblog.wordpress.com. I write about fashion, beauty and curls. Soon there’s going to be an interview session from people I know who wants to talk about their curls. I invite you to check out my blog and like my facebook page and other social media.

I am trying to love my curls for last two years …. but still no hope …. Can we please help me with the products …. please …. Right now I am using – Johnson and Johnson tip to toe wash to wash my hair Enliven/Suave natural as my conditioner and as well as leave in … And Gel -LA look … Using T-shirt for propping and all … But still my hair is frizzy and my curls loose it’s definition very easily…., please help …. trying for last two years but frizzzzzzz …. uhhhhh 😔😢😢😢😢😢

Hi Barnali! How do you apply your conditioner, leave in and gel? How much quantity do you use? Do you have heat damage?

You write so well..gal
So I trust you will reply aptly for me as well..
I have wavy hair (frizzy n thin)
I went for permanent straightening in august last year to get an increase in length in my hair which was really short ok..
Now I am at a phase wherein my natural hair is growing and 75% of my hair length is straight

How to tackle this?
I cant tie pony as it is way too thin..
Also..
I am a veg

Please can you advise regarding a weekly regime to get beautiful hair.

(I stay in a place where the water is very hard too)

Hello Anjana, Where to I fit serum for frizz control in the routine.

Heyy, what other styling products do you use now?

Just now, I go with Flax seed gel and occasionally Aloe vera.

Try incorporating a curl cream before the gel. Or a serum if that’s what you like 🙂

Thanks 🙂 I will try that!

Hey! Love your hair <3

Starting the journey and getting all the info I can possibly get. A small question, I was watching your hair routine, and I saw how you squish the conditioner onto your hair and do not rinse it off. Isn't it going to leave your hair greasy or heavy? And aren't their any concerns with leaving conditioner onto your hair like that?

Love.

Hi Suhasini, read this – Squish to Condish – The best conditioning method for curly hair You will be left with the right amount of conditioner as a leave in.

Hey,
Accidentaly bumped into your blog while looking for solution for my curly hair woes. I am delighted to find a blog for Indian curls…and so envious of your gorgeous hair.
So I have curls, mid-waist length and i coloured my hair few months ago. I now have a disaster on my head. My hair has become rough, dry and curls flat out by the evening of the hair wash. I’ve been averse to products (just use JohnFreida curl conditioner and BedHead curl control ocassionally) but I see you use and advocate whole lot of products. Is it not possible to have curls minus products and are they harmful in the long run (read dry/damaged hair or hair fall).
I am currently tying my hair in a bun as they become frizzy and wirey with no shape, texture. Plus Delhi heat is ao dry that my curls don’t stay if there is no humidity. I am totally upset with my hair at the moment 🙁
Would love to hear back from you. And i am gonna try your suggested routine.

Love ~ Shweta

Hi Shweta, there is a huge misconception that products damage hair – my hair hasn’t looked this healthy ever since I knew what kind of products to use! I guess that says something. The right nourishing products will help hydrate and define your curls 🙂

Great blog Anjana. I finally decided to embrace my curly hair and get away from my braiding and dry combing and my dreams of straightening my hair. i have never chemically straightened my hair.
I followed the steps as indicated in your routine, pre poo with coconut oil, suave almond shampoo + conditioner, leave in suave conditioner, squish to condish, curl enhance with set wet curl and patanjali aloevera gel in wet hair. I see that my hair is frizzy and has really lot of volume (the uncontrollable vol look). I feel as if the clumping has not happened that well.
can you please give me hints on where I may have gone wrong ?

Hi Swathi..have you gone through this – 16 mistakes you might be making in your curly hair routine

Hello! Thank you for the amazing tips, your hair is lovely!

I have a question. You mention you wash your hair at night so that it can dry into beautiful curls. You also say that you go to the gym everyday.
I’ve been having a hard time reconciling both of these because I would usually shower after the gym in the morning (which most likely doesn’t give me the definition I want as I run out of time) and wanting to not be all sweaty throughout the day until I make it to the shower at night. What’s your routine like? Do you just use a shower cap? Do you just wipe down?

Thank you!

T.

I workout in the evening 🙂 And do I use a shower cap when?

Thank you

Very helpful.Thank you Anjana.

🙂 🙂 Anytime Sharu

Hi Anjana, thanks for inspiring me to embrace my curls. I found all your tips useful and the great thing is it worked for me!!!!
Third day messy bun for sure though!!!!

Wow so great to hear that Shasht 🙂 Do share pics soon!

🙂 😀

Very rarely do i find a blog dedicated to curly hair management. Nice work, keep it up.

Hi Anjana!
First of all I just want to say Thank-you!! Finding your blog was probably the best thing that has happened to my hair. I feel like I was living my whole life in a hole! I have 2c/3a hair (I think) And omg I used to think I have the worst hair possible till I found you. I have now fallen in love with my hair and I actually want to do everything possible to nourish it. The density of my hair is kinda low. It’s genetic I guess. But I want to look after whatever there is.
I have just started the curly hair routine.
I am using Tresseme Botanique and conditioner. I also use the same conditioner in the diluted form as a leave in. I am applying the squish to condish method to rinse the conditioner. I finish with applying aloe vera gel and I tried set wet -wet look medium hold gel for the first time today. I applied both the gels using the prayer hold and a bit of scrunching. I plopped my hair for about half an hour and then left it open to air dry. And finally once the hair was completely dry I did SOTC to remove the gel cast. The curls were fine in the beginning. But soon the top section of my hair started losing the definition and started to frizz out a bit. And now I am noticing more frizz happening. I don’t have curls throughout the hair beginning from the roots although some sections curl that way. What else could I do to retain the shape of the curls? Also I have begun oiling once a week and washing twice a week
PS – I am from Bangalore too. I would love to meet you someday 🙂

Hey Aditi! Can you mail me some pics of your hair once they start losing definition?

How you help her ? Same happend to me

Sure will do so 🙂 Thank-you!

How do you put up your hair when you are not washing them ?
I tried claw clip but then I have to roll my hair to put them in the claw clip.
And putting them in a bun changes the curl pattern…

A loose high pony

Can i get a hair spa at the salon once a month than a deep conditioning at home?

Yes, if you think it’s benefiting your hair. Make sure they don’t blow dry after it though !

Hi! How do you go 2-3 days without combing or brushing your hair? I am a college student and I cannot leave my hair as it is, I have to tie it up and considering I go to different places during the day, when I do let my hair loose, it’s kind of hard to not comb thru it.

Because there will be no need to brush hair once you realise that they look prettier without combing – which you will after following a good routine

Haha, it’s not about looking prettier. Of course I’d want my hair to look pretty but currently, my hair tangles very easily and forms knots if I don’t comb it. Do you think that won’t be the case if I follow a good hair-care routine?

Yes adequate moisture will prevent tangles

Thank you Anjana! You’ve helped me reclaim my curls and love them again.
L.

I am so glad to hear that Linda !

Hi anjana,

its a great blog must say! i have a doubt in your video my curly hair routine… after u use conditioner and washed it, again u took conditioner and apply and didnt washed it… u used creams after that.. is that ok not to wash conditioner and leave it?

Hey Deepika, yes you can use regular conditioners as leave in conditioners.

Hi Anjana
Very lovely blog I must say. And I really love your hair. I tried your routine (with products I had) and it turned out pretty good. But can you please suggest me some budget friendly products, as I am a college going student I can’t really spurlge.

Hey anjana, i love my curls a lot. But i hate it also because of drying time it takes. Please tell me how to sleep with wet hair. When i sleep with wet hair hair around my neck make me awake all night. I literally want to follow night routine.

Why don’t you buy a diffuser Anjali?

Hey anjana if you don’t mind can i ask , how much you spend each month for curly hair routine? From where you get these imported products? How much they actually ( divided in each month usuage) cost to you each month?

I haven’t really thought of this before. More so because I buy a lot of products, because I like experimenting. But if I were to use only my staples, let me see how much it would cost me….around 1500 per month

And I buy the US products from amazon.in

Thanks for reply now i can buy cantu and deva curl products 😊😊

Very recent entrant to the whole new world of curly hair upkeep. Im amazed to know that combing is not needed!!!!!!!!!!! I cant believe it and thats exactly what i was doing and wondering where my curls went.
Ok here’s what i do and need help with. I have long hair and planning to keep it long till waist/hips. When i wash it i get beautiful curls which dry out in frizz. i also do a strict oiling regimen once or twice a week (its needed as my hair was falling). I use a mild shampoo next day and do need to use lots to remove all the oil. I use natural oil based shampoos but still hair looks greasy if i dont use enough.
Now I dont want to use any chemical product post shampoo. So what options do i have? I use couple drops of jojoba oil to get that hydrated look.
But my question is_
1) what else do i do to get defined curls WITHOUT any store bought product.
2) do I not comb my hair going forth? Not at all? then what about blood circulation in scalp? Can i use a wide toothed comb? or do i just wake up and go to work? I cant fathom this not combing 🙂 pls help 🙂

Hi anjana
Visiting ur blog for the first I liked hair routine and hair too….so can u Please help me out how to control frizzy dry hair and how to maintain my hair

Hiya,

I’ve been following your method for applying the products while still in the shower and although I’m having great results I find quite tricky to no dry my hair once I’m done with all the treatments.
I tried diffusing but I found my hair was a bit crunchy afterwise.
Do you think it would ok to wrap my hair for maybe 15 to 20 minutes with a microfiber towel to absorb the excess and then just air dry?
Btw your post and updates are fantastic!

Thanks
Eilyn

Hi,

Used the same products and did the same routine but the curls are not staying its disappearing after couple of hours. I used the cantu lotion and deva curl gel; revlon conditioner and loreal shampoo.
Also have a lot of flyaway hairs even after application of the above.
Help me out in how to make it look like proper bouncy curls. Where am i going wrong?

  • Do you apply everything on dripping wet hair?
  • How much quantity of each product do you apply?
  • What is your hair length?
  • Do you apply everything on dripping wet hair? – YES
How much quantity of each product do you apply? – about half the quantity shown in the video
What is your hair length – Medium just below the Shoulders

Double the quantity of gel. Increase the amount of conditioner left in after squish to condish

    Hi, Thanks it did work..
Also would like to know which brand of Hair dryer diffuser to use?

    Hey Anjana
I have never tried anything like this before. I have bought loreal smooth intense conditioner, taft marathon power gel and cantu shea butter moisturising curl activator cream. The activator cream has not been delivered yet so i was wondering if i could follow your routine without the activator cream for a couple of days. Will my hair become curly just using the conditioner and the cream?

*will my hair become curly just using the conditioner and the gel?

“Become” curly?? This routine(and blog) is for naturally curly hair – to make it frizz free and define it

Sorry i should have been more clear. I meant to say well defined curls. I do have 2c 3a type hair.

Yes 🙂 you will start seeing a difference with just conditioner and gel

Monumental difference. Can’t stop staring at myself 😂. Got so many compliments already. Thank you sooo much 😀

So great to hear that !

    Hi Anjana,

First of all thank you very much for these tips. I have been getting comments recently that my curls are looking great 🙂
I have also learnt much better on how to maintain my curls.

Recently i bought lemon grass oil & lavender oil. It is concentrated and has strong smell. I bought them from yercaud hills.
I am not sure how to dilute it and use? could you give me some tips.

Also for refreshing curls I use some conditioner+ water and spray. Can that mixture be kept for a couple of days or should we mix them daily? and what additional things can be added to this spray?

does spraying conditioner , applying gels lead to product build up? I only wash my hair twice a week.

    Thank you

So great to hear that Ramya 🙂

  • I have a oil blend recipe in this post, you can get a rough idea from that – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/hairfall-causes-remedies/
  • I think it will stay good for a week. Just smell and check before every use to see if it has gone bad. You can add lavendar oil in the spray.
  • No it won’t build up if you use CG friendly products
  • Thank you so much for this. As a fellow indian with curly hair this was needed!❤️

    🙂

    Hi Anjana,

Super excited to see that your blog holds all the answers to questions I have had for years! I have transition hair and I am just beginning to go back to my natural curls. I have one question about co-washing though. I have dandruff so would co-washing increase flakes ? I shampoo once a week and just started co-washing once a week, but wanted to check for alternatives in-case co-washing increases my dandruff.

Thanks a ton for the awesome blog ! And really nice to see how passionate you are about this.

Ya cowashing may not suit dandruff prone scalp. Give it a try once to see if or not it suits you 🙂

Thanks for the reply Anjana! If it does not suit me, could you please suggest an alternative since I would like to wash my hair atleast twice a week ?

    Shampoo

Hi anjana! Thank you so much for your tutorial! I pretty much followed to the T for my senior pictures. My boyfriend is a marine and after following your tutorial, he said that my hair was beautiful and my curls looked so pretty. It really made my day so I just wanted to say thank you for giving us your beautiful hair tutorial! Semper Fi!💘

So great to hear that Brooke!

I’m going to try it. Will let you know how it went. Thanks!!

    Hi
Instead of the Cantu creamy lotion if I apply Cantu curl activator , is the application procedure the same as shown in video? Do I need to rake in the activator cream and then scrunch?

Yes. You can also try raking and check which results you like better

    Thanks!!!

    Anjana,

I just came across this. After literally despising my hair for i feel like centuries, it has just dawned upon me how i need to take care of nature’s gift to me – my girls. I love your blog. I’m glad i stumbled upon it. Loved reading this post and the links added.

Starting this routine from today onwards.
    I’m sticking around, yeah!!

    Yay! Keep me posted 🙂

Hi! So my hair tends to get weighed down at the roots and parts to give me that ugly triangle shape. When I try to fix it, it gets frizzy or if I mess with it my curls break apart. What can I do? Thanks!!

Thank you I will definitely try these tips

    Hi anjana…
please make a video of how you deal with frizz.

The video in this post is how I deal with frizz

thnk you for the rply anjana… but the video shows your washday… i was asking about second and third day… sort of refreshing techniques nd managing frizz on second nd third day.
    sorry for not being specific

Check this Bhavya 4 ways to refresh curly hair

Thank you SO much for all of this helpful information! I am still working on nailing down how much product to use, but I think I am close. Squish to Condish and scrunching product into soaking wet hair has made a HUGE difference for me! I can get great 2nd day hair even after working out! 3rd day hair is becoming more of a challenge, and I think rewetting my hair (close to soaking) gives the best results for me to keep my hair looking good while down. I don’t use quite as much product when I do this (only about half as much) and hair milk (lighter than a leave-in) doesn’t weight it down. I can even get good 4th day hair doing this! I only use a good hydrating curl refreshing spray or light misting with a Flairisol spray bottle on days 2 and 4. It’s humid here (summer in the US) so I’ll have to see if this can work for winter time.

Thank you for all you do, and I love your site!

    So good to hear that!

I haven’t heard of this brand

    Thanks for replying.
    Is this diffuser looking fine?

    How can I say that?

Hi Anjana. Your blog is a like a Bible for curly girls. I haven’t come across anything that’s so informative and has such simple and easy tips to follow to get great looking curls. I usually follow YouTube videos by Bianca Renee (i live in Mumbai) but currently i m glued to your blog 😃 . I have 3b/3c curls and have largely benefited from your cowash and squish to condish technique. I use a kerastase cleansing conditioner followed by kerastase oleo curl leave in and top it up with home made flaxseed gel. However i want to try the Cantu products and the Deva curl gel. I have a concern and will appreciate your suggestions/feedback on the same. Is it advisable to purchase cantu/Deva curl/ shea moisture or any of these US manufactured products on Amazon india website? I am a bit apprehensive of buying these in India as am not sure if the products delivered will be genuine. Please do respond so that i can proceed with purchasing these online in India. Thanks

I am so glad to hear that Fiza! Yes, I buy them all the time, just check for seller ratings and reviews 🙂

Thanks Anjana. I will definitely try it out then 😃

Hi Anjana..! I’ve gone for the big chop after having my hair straight for a year and now I’m growing out my beautiful curls.. I use the eco styler pink gel but people say that a gel weakens the hair.. Is that true??

Not that I know of 🙂

    That’s good!! Thank u!! 🙂

Hi Anjana, i am really happy that i came across your blog 🙂 this is was really needed for me..i have got a concern i got my crown area straightened a year ago, my hair is medium length hair with 3a/3b curls few of my hair looks straight and few curly, i really want to grow my hair but kinda don’t know how to start the routine too. Can you help me out?

Hi Anjana, first of all, your hair are extremely beautiful.
I am new to your site and I’m so inspired, I have wavy to curly hair, I have some questions to ask.
I’m facing a little not too much problem of premature white hair, what should I do to stop this?
And next why and how frequently should we use a hair mask?( I found argan deluxe mask quite promising, looking forward to buy it😊).
I would be happy if you could answer my problems.

Colouring is the only option I know of. You can mask as often as you have the time 🙂

Hi Anjana, how many times a week do you deep condition?

Once or twice per month, but if your hair is really dry, it’s a good idea to do it everytime you wash

Hello ! I really new in all of these embrace my 2b, thick, low/medium porosity and medium density hair in a really humidity country (Costa Rica). I just doing some research for the best method, products and routine for my hair, it´s a lot and confuse information.

I been trying differents things: The ultimate sulffate shampoo wash, sugar scrub and ACV rinse, then start this routine:
    – Coconut oil the night before
    – Wash my hair with shampoo and co-wash in between. i read that for my thick low/medium porosity hair and the humidity place is better no leave off shampoo, is this true ?
    – Next i squish to condish with warm water and left about 10% of the product , is better to rinse with cold or warm water?
    – For stylish with my damp hair i use 5% cream and 95% medium gel. Recomendantions: damp or really wet hair ?
    – Plop for 30 min
    – Air Dry
    – Scrunch the crunch

My results day 1, little frizzy, is fine but i feel itchy and flake scalp. For day 2-3 my hair is growsy, frizzy whenbi refresh.

I use an Aloe Vera Shampoo, Coco Conditioner and Flaxseed Curly Cream (National Product call Bioland) and the Biotera Bamboo Gel. This are sulffate, silicone, pareben and alcohol free. For me is difficult to find products CGM safe, in my country everything have sulffate or is too expensive.

PD. Sorry for my english 😅

    – I wouldn’t use a lot of oil on normal/low porosity.
    – I didn’t understand – leave off shampoo???
    – Neither too warm nor too cold
    – Damp for volume, wet for frizz control

Thanks !! This is very helpful !!

leave off shampoo??_ , i read about the co-washing method and how you have to stop using shampoo and only use conditioner. But in other blog i read that for my thick low/medium porosity hair and the humidity of my country is better use shampoo. It´s true ?

    Yes, true

Oky, i take note about all this and. Thanks !

    Hi Anjana,

I’m very new to the whole curly hair routine. I’m guessing my hair is not damaged as I have never used any heat/coloring on it. I followed this routine and I still have a lot of frizz in my hair. What do you think may be the reason? The only thing I did different was wash off the conditioner after squish to condish. Also is it a wait game, should do this many times before I can get to see the results?
You have a very nice blog! Great job!!!

    Thanks,
    Lakshmy

You need to leave conditioner in. It does getter better with time and practice but you should be able to see considerable change already

Thanks for the response Anjana. So in the meantime (before the next wash), how to deal with the knots that have formed? Can I brush it out? I just want to make sure it’s not a mess by the time I wash it causing all that hair to fall off.

    Thanks again.

You could, if that’s what you want to do

    Hi Anjana,

I tried the same routine again. Prepoo, shampoo, conditioner, squish to condish, sheamoisture smoothie as cream, and DevaCurl ultra defining gel. But I still have a lot of frizz. Do you think I’m not using enough of the products? I will send you a pic of my wash day hair. If you could take and look and guide me that would be great. Thanks a lot.

Yes please send a pic on Instagram and give me context there 🙂

How to reduce these extra bouncy curls ?? I like them low and flat but they dont behave like that

    What’s your curl type?

Hi 🙂 my hair is almost straight and low porosity hair and can stand a lil bit of protein. my crown was always flat so to get some volume i layered my hair and it started being all wavy which I don’t want. And even when I never had layers my ends had one bend like an inverted question mark. I like mine straight. I wanted to start cg method. I want to use the bounce curl enzyme gentle clarifying shampoo and cantu milk as in leave in conditioner. as I gym mostly everyday I would like to wash with as I am coconut co wash and conditioner after that. And use the clarifying shampoo when needed. But my doubt is it says curl enzyme on the bounce curl clarifying shampoo so does it make my hair curly? I have seen lotta transformations like that. And lil conditioner weighs my hair down. No conditioner makes my hair look like hay. And if I don’t wash my hair for two three days it’s oily. I don’t refresh cause I feel refresh is to get the moisture back in the hair. When my hair is already oily. And one more thing why is citric acid in hair care products? Ppl use it to lighten their complexion or scars n stuff. So does that happen to hair too?? I mean citric acid lightens hair ?? Is it safe to use ? Pls help. So much of info n i m so confused. 🙁

I don’t understand why you want to use these products/the method – all this enhances your natural pattern which you don’t want

Thank you so much Anjana for taking time out to reply. I wanted to try these cause it was safer without harsh chemicals.

In that case – “curl enzyme on the bounce curl clarifying shampoo so does it make my hair curly?” – Nope
“And one more thing why is citric acid in hair care products? Ppl use it to lighten their complexion or scars n stuff. So does that happen to hair too?? I mean citric acid lightens hair ??” – It is a preservative and is usually less than 1% of the ingredients when used as a preservative. At that concentration it has no lightening effects.

and I forgot About salicylic acid. It peels facial skin. So does it do the same to scAlp ? I mean scAlp is a part of our skin too no ??

Salicylic acid removes oil from the scalp

Hi dere..i have been using d enliven cnditioner but m not getting dat much slip wich is required for easy detangling so i end up having lots of hairfall while detangling..n if i use silicone conditioner i have lots of slip while detangling lesser hairfall but no volume and no curl hold..m confused..wat to do?

You could try more expensive conditioners like Devacurl

    Hi Anjana,
It is a great help for girls like me. I have started my cg method but the problem I face is that when I air dry my hair after washing I am getting cold so could you tell me any good brands of hair driers with diffuser?

not even kidding, am serious.. you are a goddess for us curly haired girls.. suddenly i am seeing future for my wavy hair.. omg i am so much in love with u

Mam does this curly hair routine works on chemically straightened hair .my natural hairs are growing curly but straightened hairs are still there so to follow this routine should I wait till my hairs gets completely curly or I can follow this curly routine on half curl and half straight hairs .

    Hi Anjana
I tried following your CG routine but I am facing a lot of hairfall while washing or oiling it or when i use a comb to detabgle it when it’s wet.

    thank you😘

How do you know which products work best with curly hair? I used to use a brand that actually got discontinued because it was actually harmful.

    By reading ingredients and experimenting

Something in between 3b and 2a . they r close to head, frizzy and loopy with less circumference

Do you mean 3b and 3a?

I just wanted to let you know that your easy to follow routines and techniques have been a godsend for me. You are a great teacher! Keep up the awesome work! ❤️

I am so glad to hear that Missy 🙂

Omigosh! I looove this blog so much!!

I have thick, long curly hair not unlike yours (a mix of my Filipina mom’s thick hair and my white dad’s curly hair), and seeing your routine and suggestions (with pictures!! so helpful!!) is giving me hope again! I spent years growing my hair out after cutting it very short (almost pixie-cut short), and almost 4 years later, my hair length is just past my shoulder blades. I’ve been having so much trouble with caring for my hair for months that I’m getting so close to cutting it all off again.

What’s great is that you’re specific with what you do with your hair, while being vague about the products so that I don’t have to worry about getting very specific products and brands! All of a sudden, having a curly hair routine doesn’t seem like an impossible challenge anymore.

I do have a couple of questions for you, if that’s okay!

    1) Do you have any sleeping suggestions for restless sleepers or people who move a lot in bed? I toss and turn a lot throughout the night, so I’ve gotten into braiding my hair at night to keep it from knotting (also to keep my thick mane out of my poor husband’s face).

    2) I work in food service full time (I manage coffee shops), and I’m required to keep my hair restrained at all times for both sanitation and personal safety. I keep my hair in a braid – with how long it is, a simple ponytail risks getting it into drinks and food, and I don’t want to accidentally get it stuck in something dangerous. Do you have any advice for keeping my hair looking happy and alive after work when I can finally let it down?

    3) I’ve wanted to get into a coconut oil routine for ages now, but just the concept of buying coconut oil is scary. Do you buy coconut oil that is specifically made for hair, or is coconut oil from the baking aisle at the grocery store just fine?

    4) Would you suggest not using a brush at all? I brush my hair out in the shower when I wash and condition. Should I completely replace that with finger detangling?

Thank you so much for taking so much time to putting together this amazing, comprehensive blog for curly hair! I will be sharing this with all of my curly hair friends!

I am super happy to see your excitement Jen! 🙂
    1. A bonnet would be the best for you – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/sleep-satin-bonnet-preserve-curls-overnight/
    2. Not really 🙁 Braids and buns can destroy definition. You could try refreshing
    3. Just regular coconut oil 🙂
    4. You could if you want to, I prefer not to

    Hi Anjana,

Thank you SO MUCH for this wonderful blog and BEAUTIFUL CURLS btw! I, like you and many others only learned to love my curls in my twenties and I thought I knew enough and accepted my somewhat curls as is. But after reading your blog, I have new and renewed love/enthusiasm to styling my curls and can’t wait to try it.

    Question:
    1) I’ve been using the Shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie and then a hair mousse (herbal Essences or Tresemme). Can you tell me if you’ve tried this and how it compares to using a gel?
    2) Have you used the Shea Moisture Gel Souffle? I use it, but its very heavy and a little goes a long way. But I don’t think it provides much hold.. however I am wondering if maybe I am using it incorrectly or not enough?

    THANKYOU!

    1) Not this combination, but mousse generally doesn’t give me the hold I want
    2) No haven’t used it Sup

    Hi Anjana!

First off, your blog is amazing. I have been following your routine sans hair gels for the past few weeks and my curls want to thank you for that 🙂
I especially like how you do not insist on sulfate free products. I have tried a number of them and they all seem to increase hairfall. Currently, I use shampoos from The Body Shop (Strawberry Glossing & Banana Nourishing) with the Banana Nourishing Conditioner. I dilute the conditioner with a few drops of oil for leave it. Works great.

However, I have noticed that my curls (type 2b/c) seem to straighten out the day after wash day and are reduced to waves. I like to braid my hair into a plait while sleeping. I don’t know if that’s the cause. How do I make the curls stay? Not sure if it’s my hair type/the geography of where I currently stay (New York City). Would appreciate some suggestions on this.

Also, have an issue with hairfall due to the water here, if you have any insights on that, I’d love to hear it.

    Thanks in advance

    Hey, Anjana.

Do you use shampoo at all, or do you just stick to conditioner on wash day?
And do you comb the tangles out very often?
What exactly does your hair look like after a few days before washing again? Is it very frizzy?

I use shampoo – it’s mentioned in this post.
This routine also explains how I detangle.
Yes it gets frizzy through the week.

Hi … i started to embrace my curls after knowing how to take care of it by following the methods and products you have suggested… thanks you so much for it…
I oil my hair before every hair wash … i would like to know what shampoo can I use to remove oil from hair at the same time the moisture should be retained … it should not completely make it dry … I used shea moisture shampoo but it doesn’t remove oil… it works well on Normal hair wash days..

Hi Madhu, you should use only as much oil as your shampoo can remove.

Have you tried any natural homemade products? It would be really cool to make our own products for the curly girl method! I am going to start my curly girl journey, got inspired from your website!

Hi anjana really nice blog, which diffuser you used to diffues. Pleas reply

This is such a wonderful blog! Lots of helpful hair tips.

I’ve also found this tool to help me create and implement my own hair care routine:

    https://diyhair.teachable.com/p/how-to-create-an-effective-hair-care-routine

Do i need to apply gel on daily basis or only on the day when i washed my hair?

Usually only when you wash your hair. You can also use a teeny tiny amount on refresh days (not compulsory)

    Hi Anjana
I need help for my daughters curly hair. It’s really confusing what products will work for her. i need your guidance in this regard. How can I send you her hair image? I live in Bahrain. https://www.dropbox.com/s/a512wyp1k1190e6/IMG_0794.JPG?dl=0

Hi, I tried to see if I could find content first before posting this question so you wouldn’t have to repeat yourself but I couldn’t find anything so I am sorry if you do talk about your gym hair routine and I missed it.

So I just started the CG method, eliminated silicons/sulfates because my curl pattern has just lost its life and has gotten super stringy and weighed down. My hair used to be very curly but over the years it’s loosened up to where it’s fine 2B hair (2C in summer). I have never been the hair straightening type (cause laziness) so I don’t have the heat issue, nor is it dyed, but I am terrible about getting consistent haircuts.

One thing I have been struggling with is gym hair. I also go to the gym and workout probably around 5-6 days a week. First off, my head sweats A LOT. There is no way I can leave the gym without drenched hair to my shoulders. So pre-CG when not washing your hair everyday was said to be key to hair health a couple of years ago, I would just spritz it with some water and BRUSH my hair. Then my hair started to get really bad. So I asked my hairdresser wtf I should be doing and she said definitely wet it fully, co-wash etc, because otherwise the salt stays in your hair which can break down the cuticle.

I’m just wondering, because you say you still wash your hair every 2-3 days, what you do on your gym days? Because it is such a pain to have to wash it basically every single day even if I am just co-washing. I think my hair can probably handle it because it is so fine and I can get an oily scalp, but I was just wondering if you have any secret tricks. I watched what India Batson does after a workout but I don’t know if that would work for me. I feel like I would end up with a itchy scalp and 1000’s of tangles.

    Thank you!

Oops sorry! I think I just keyword searched “gym” but not “workout”. Thank you! 🙂

    Hi Anjana,

Can you please suggest me different hairstyles while doing workout or while sleeping. It’s difficult to handle hair while sleeping. Please suggest

    Hi Anjana,

Can you please share a video for your co wash routine.
You use the same enliven conditioner for co wash?

    Thanks!

Also , does this conditioner removes oil ?

Not too much of oil. It is meant to be a gentle cleansing

    Noted. Yes, or revlon flex

    Hi Anjana,
Thanks for all your replies !
One more question- recently I have used Arafat cream as leave in …its making my curls tight and more defined. But it’s also making hair very dry and straw like … or kind of sticky … what could Be the reason … I have short hair and I use little amount almost peanut size cream…thanks

It isn’t a cream that should cause stickiness, esp since you are using so less! Not sure Aditi :\

    Hi Anjana,

Can I braid my curly hair?

Yes, but it will spoil curl definition and you may need to wash your hair to get them back

I am having fine medium length hair when i tried CG routine i dint get good results my curls are loose my hair is soft and looking very thin and greasy. what should i do for my hair to look good.

    What products did you use?

Mama Earth Shampoo, Enliven coconut and vanilla conditioner, ustra hair cream and enliven ultimate hair gel. I am a student so i cant spend more on hair products. this are budget friendly products for me.

The cream maybe too heavy for fine hair. Skip the cream, use Enliven as leave in, add more gel

Hi! My daughter who is 9yrs old has 3b type hair. She has got short hair. I would appreciate if you could guide me how to proceed.

Thanks! My daughter has short hair( not too short) Is it fine to apply conditioner on scalp?

Which step are you talking about Amity?

    Thankq so much.

    Hi Anjana!
I’ve been following your blog for a while now and I’ve tried the CG method for my curls but I’m really not getting the results I want. I feel so clueless and helpless right now. I have 3a/3b low porosity hair.
    Any advice please?

What’s your curl type, coarseness and length? How much of each product do you use?

My curl type is 3a/3b and it’s really thick and coarse. The length is around my upper back.
I use Jovees hair shampoo and then alot of Shea moisture conditioner (maybe three
to four pumps of it) then I follow it up with the Shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie (I section my hair and I try to distribute the product evenly) and I apply the arata flaxseed gel. I also use a Denman brush for even distribution of the products.

How much of the smoothie and gel do you use?

About 3-4 coin size amount. Both for smoothie and gel.

Can you share a few pics of your hair to my Instagram account?

I tried the above routine and I started having real nice spirals on the very first day itself. But i want my hair in the crown part to be curly also. Are there any ways?

    Hi Anjana,
Whenever i use cantu curl activator cream as a leave-in, after a day , my scalp itches and I get this powdery thing on my scalp.I dont understand why.I only do the usual squish to condish using cantu activator cream after applying a small amount andrelon conditioner and then apply Deva curl gel. I plop my hair and air dry. I also noticed that the itching increases if i use a diffuser. Now with the same routine if i use Garnier loving blends mask as leave in, then i dont have any problem.😑. Do you know what could be the problem?

I’ve heard that many people are allergic to the cream, best to stop using it 😐

Ohh! that’s scary. Stopping right away 😣. Thanks a ton.

    Hi Anjana ,
Can you please also share a video for your refresh routine.

    Thanks

    I know it’s long pending 😐

Hi, would like to like follow the curly hair routine . But I’m so confused. Not sure if I have wavy or curly hair to start with. ( I’m leaning towards curly though). How can I be sure? How will I know the curl type? Would be great if someone could help me in person 🙂

Hey, so I came across your page a while ago and ever since I’ve made such great progress with my wavy curls and I fell in love with them so thank you so much for that! The only problem im having now is that they get frizzy and puffy the day after i wash my hair and I just want to know what I could to to avoid that?

Hey Carolyn, how do you protect your hair at night? How do you refresh it the next day?

Hi Anjana thank you so much for tips. Have some queries
My crown area is also very flat
After applying gel my curls becomes thin and tight.. I even can’t flip my hair.. Thin stringy curls..🙁 You have lovely hair.. Your curls are just ❤️.. Help me out girl

[…] scrunching and hair washing- Curls and Beauty Diary (Blog) […]

    Hi Anjana,
No questions this time. Just wanted to thank you for helping me find my ultimate curly routine! Never loved my hair more.

Your blog saved me. Thank you so much❤️

I am glad to hear that Samhita!!

Have you tried mamaearth products? I checked curlsbot and their conditioner and hair mask for deep con is CG approved too. I struggled to find products at first but found mama earth and they’re not that expensive too. Would love your review on it too, though. 🙂

The shampoo was quite good but the conditioner and mask had really poor slip and didn’t provide hydration

    Hi Anjana,

Can shea moisture jamaican black castor oil conditioner be used for co washing?

    Thanks!

It maybe a bit too heavy

    Hi Anjana,

Can you tell me how to transform hair on the back of your head? I use curly method too but my hair can form ringlets front of my face or sides but back of my head always like staws. Do you have any tips??( By the way my hair type 2b/2c)

    Thanks for your time.

How do you apply your products Gul?

First Low-Poo Shampoo, then i use on mid-hair lenght my conditioner gently, I use approximate a coin size and scrunch. Rinse some of it. While my hair wet i use Schwarzkopf Taft Marathon Gel. I’m scrunching with a microfiber towel for the speed up drying or else takes forever to dry. Last I plop with a cotton tshirt or cotton turban. I tried satin turban but that make it worse for front of my hair too. My hair never been colored or severe damage.

    Thank you for answering

Gul, doesn’t look like you are using enough quantity of the products – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/much-conditioner-use/
Also how you apply the conditioner doesn’t seem right – have you seen the video linked in this post?

Yes, my useage of conditioner considerable low from the video. I’m going to try to described usage. thank you for your help.

this blog helped a lot of us curly girls. you are a amazing person:)

    Hello Anjana!

I have been dabbling with CG for a couple of years, but haven’t had the mental space to really devote to figuring out what my hair needs. However, I am finally ready to jump in, and this blog is SUPER helpful! Thank you for the clear explanation of what is happening in the hair and why certain chemicals, ingredients, routines are causing (or might be causing) certain results. I am a type of girl who doesn’t love research, but also wants to know the why of things and not just be told what to do — especially since every Curly Girl is different!

I am only just beginning my process, like I said (though I’ve been trying to stay away from sulfates, drying my hair by plopping with a T, and sleeping on a silk pillowcase with my hair up in some fashion for the last couple of years). However, after scouring several of your posts, I did a multi-step regimen yesterday as kind of an emergency moisturizing treatment — my hair is, and has for months now been, severely dry. While I am still learning a LOT and know it could be a long time before finding my perfect routine/products, etc., it was an amazing boost to this 24-weeks-pregnant mama to roll out of bed this morning and have picture-perfect hair. That has NEVER happened before!!

Thank you for giving me a jumping point and bringing a boost of confidence to this lady who has been feeling frustrated and self-conscious about her hair for months. <3

I am so glad for this comment Meghann!

I kinda have a thick density hair which is hard to be tamed.I tried these hairstyles but it’s too hard to fit on my hair..Can an hair cut help to refine my hair.Coz I have a long hair.I can send a pic of my hair if u need..

    I don’t understand – the hairstyles don’t fit ?

    Hi Anjana,
I have just started following the curly hair routine. Today is my first day and I did observe the perfect curls when I washed them at night. I slept on a silky pillowcase but in the morning they were open and falling. Is this normal in the initial days or am I doing something wrong?
Additionally, I go to gym on daily basis and have long hair (till hips). Before following the curly hair routine, I used to tie my hair in a plait (which involved combing). Can you suggest me some hair dos or techniques to tie my hair which will not effect the curls? I wonder how you used to keep your hair open at home. Please suggest me some ways to tie the heavy and long curly hair.

    Hi Anjana,

I have been using Curly Girl Method almost 97% .

Exceptions to the routine are I have to color my hair most of them at temples (I use color shampoo as the color stays for atleast 10 days else it goes off in 7 days)

I also comb just the crown portion and loosely clip it on my head. And I like with that much hair looking straightish.

My real concern is dry coarse strawy hair a the ends. Again not all hair but entire middle patch of hair are like that at the ends. They are just dry no matter what I use 🙁 And the whole hair gets damn frizzy the next day. and yes I sleep on a satin pillow case.

I use Devas No poo shampoo and Devas gel, Shea moisture leave in and curl enhancing cream.

I deep condition my hair twice a week with Shea Moisture Restorative hair mask and oil masks. When I use Oil masks I use Body Shops Rainforest Moisture Shampoo..

    What to do?

That’s strange Shweta, looks like you are doing everything right. Do you think you have heat or chemical damage? Also, how much of each of these products you mentioned do you use? Would also be good to give this a read https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/16-mistakes-might-making-curly-hair-routine/

No ..I don’t even blow dry my hair in salon after hair cut.

Last December cut my hair ear length from shoulder length.

Using 2 pumps of gel and almost 2tbsp each of leave in conditioner and curl cream.

It just has to frizz up. I don’t rub my hair too. Intact use cotton t shirts to just wrap my wet hair after using products in dripping hair.

    What to do?

Have heard olaplex no 3 is good for dry hair. Should I try?

Try increasing the quantity of the products. Olaplex is more for damaged hair

    Hi Anjana
I need you suggestion on removing gel cast. Can you please suggest what should I use to remove gel cast from my hair? An oil or serum? Please suggest the names for the same.

I use my bare hands Neha. You can also use 1-2 drops of pure argan oil if you like.

Hi Anjana! Loved your post. Having curly hair myself i can say that he tips that you have mentioned are really helpful. You can also check out a similar article on curly hair care routine here -http://www.thefleekstreak.com/your-ultimate-curly-hair-care-routine-get-smooth-curls-in-7-simple-steps/

Hey, so glad I stumbled upon your page, absolutely loving your detailed analysis and tips and tricks for curly hair. Can’t wait to try them out. I hope it works for me as well, because I’m tired of hating my hair. Anyway, could you help me out as to what kind of haircut can I get for my hair, that’ll help with the frizz and curl pattern?

Haircuts are for shape, not for frizz control. The routine and products are what will help with frizz control. Check this Ashwini https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/haircuts-for-curly-hair/

    Thankyou. 🌼

    Hi Anjana!
I have been following CG for past 4 months, seen a lot of improvement in my damaged hair.
What I’m observing is that still I can see some frizz even in wet hair while applying products.
    I scrunch and it increases.
Your advice would be deeply appreciated.
    Thank you.

Hi Jessica, either your hair is not wet enough, or you are not applying enough products, or both 🙂

I apply products in dripping wet water. If i feel water is less, I add a little more of water in section.
I apply little product where there is frizz and scrunch my hair again. Again frizz is created.
This happens in some section of hair and not all.

Then maybe the scrunching action is causing the frizz. Try avoiding scrunching

Hey Anjana, I have few questions..
    1) I am using the product mentioned by you in your blog. I have 3a type coarse hairs. Should I continue with the same product for my hairs or explore new products.
    2) my hair’s are getting brownish in colours.

    1) It’s upto you if you want to try out new products 🙂
    2) That could be because of sun exposure or your genes

    Hi Anjana!
It’s me again with a new question. 😅🙈
So I read somewhere that at times hair does undergo haircut shock!
I have no clue about it..! 🤷🏻‍♀️
Could you please give some light upon it?

This 23rd, Sat is my birthday and I’m planning to have a haircut (more of trimming of the ends and give more defined layers) the previous Sunday of it which is on 16th.

What would be your suggestion about it?

    Check this Jessica https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/curly-haircut-shock-adapting-new-haircut/
And birthday wishes in advance 🙂

Thank you so much Anjana for your wishes! 😄
I am not sure if it was shock or no, but it did take few days time for my hair to look better than before.
The curl definition is improved quite a lot.
However now as winter has come up, all these happiness is just freezing away due to increasing dryness and frizz due to cold, difficult to manage and understand.
I’m feeling as if I’m losing moisture in this climate.
Could you give some tips or amy suggestions?
I face 2 different types of climate, weekends of Mumbai wherein Winter exists with some amount of humidity but weekdays of Pune where winter is cold and dry.
In dry climate my hair tend to have more frizz.
    Please do help me out!

Thank you so much Anjana. 😄☺️

    Hi,
What shampoo do you use and would recommend for curly hair of 2c or 3a type?

    Compliments of the season ☺️

    To you too, Jessica 🙂

    Hey Anjana,
Recently have seen many curly ladies complimenting about Denman brush.
I would be way to glad you to review about it.
    Waiting from now. 😁

Will review it whenever I get around to trying it 🙂

    Hi Anjana,

I’m facing a lot of hair fall. I can feel the dryness in the hair though I oil it. I comb my hair a lot of times as it gets messy. I have a lot of short hair..so even if I try to put braids it doesn’t work.. Hair density is getting worse! Can you help me out? 🙂

Nice informative blog, thanks for sharing the tips for curly hair routine, any non sticky hair oil you can suggest which we can apply which is also a bit reasonable and go out

Hi Anjana. I was reading your curly hair routine and had a small doubt if you could clear it plz. Why do we need a hair cream after shampoo? Hair will already have defined curls after hair wash when it is wet. Can’t we just use a gel to set those curls?

Hi Kavya, creams and leave ins provide moisture. You can skip it if your hair is not dry 🙂

    Thank you 😊

    Hi anjana.
Can u please post ur entire week routine of hair care from Monday to Sunday. Like when u oil ur hair, when u deep condition, when u shampoo, when u co-wash, when u apply hair pack? I find that if I don’t apply oil my Hair dries out by 3rd day after wash. And if I oil I have to shampoo . So that way I wud b shampooing 2-3 times a week

Tejaswi I don’t oil my hair on a weekly basis. At most I oil my hair once in 1-2 months just because I am in the mood for it. Try to combat dryness by changes in your routine/products/quantity instead of relying on oils 🙂

    Hi Anjana,

Could you please provide a review of Love Beauty and Planet Shampoo and Conditioner? Is it good for curly hair?
Also, is it necessary to use cream and gel both, along with conditioner?
I recently started the curly hair routine few months back and the first product I used was Kayos flaxseed gel, I have used two bottles already, I found it decent, but I’m looking to try other products, to find something even better.

And even I hated my hair, but now I’ve started living them 🙂
Everybody now says that I’ve done something to my hair, as they were not curly before, and ask if I got them curled from outside :p

I have 2c/3a type curls, please suggest suitable affordable products. Also, I need some suggestions for the crown area, it becomes flat very soon.

Aashima, I haven’t used Love Beauty and Planet products. Cream provides moisture and gel gives hold. You can experiment with and without to see what your hair likes. Check these – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/beginner-friendly-simple-curly-hair-starter-kit/
    https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/10-ways-prevent-crown-lying-flat-curls-roots/

    Hi Anjana
I just recently started my curly hair journey and I have a few doubts if you could help with them please.
    1. I have a mix of 3a, 3b curls and my hair is very fine or thin. I have very short hair as of now. So when I do the STC method of conditioning I get bigger clumps and my hair looks very sparse with gaps. But the good part is I get my crown area also to curl with this method and it’s not lying flat and straight.
But if I follow the raking or combing method then I get smaller clumps, but my crown area is very flat and straight without any curls. It doesn’t look very good.
I don’t understand how can I fix this. Could you please help.
Also I wanted to know if the STC method gets the conditioner to the roots and weighs it down?

    Hi Anjana!

I have been following your curly routine since the day I started my journey and I’m absolutely loving it. Thankyou for making me adore my curls.
I have also lately started watching other curly hair blogger videos where they brush their damped hair with the products applied on them. I want to know is that beneficial? Do you do that? If yes, then how do you do it?

I don’t do that Sharanya. You could try it to see if you like it 🙂

Chechi, എന്റെ hair il eppozhum single strand il thanne kett veezhunnu. Like they form a knot on a single strand. Ennit ath potti pokunnu. What would have caused this? Can you please advise me a solution?

Hi Aswathy, single strand knots are difficult to prevent. Try deep conditioning and keeping hair as moisturised as possible.

    Hi Anjana,
It is a delight to be on your website, a blessing indeed. Like many others i too have started embracing my curls quite lately, in my late 20s actually. But is do face a lot of issue with my curls. First up:
    1. I experience a very bad hairfall, like there is hair everywhere.
    2. The thickness of a single hair is low….which means the they are quite weak singularly.
    3. They give me good texture on the day i wash them but starting 3rd day they start falling flat and sometimes brittle.
    4. The length of my hair does not and even if it does i experience a bad hairfall because of which is have to again cut them short.

I normally use cocount oil mixed with camphor and onion juice before every wash. Sometimes i do indulge in hair mask of dahi/banana or eggs.
i wash my hairs with himalaya protien shampoo.
i condition my hair with rice water
i use a after wash hair cream from himalaya.

i am hoping to get some fruitful advice.
    Best
    Priyanka

Hi Priyanka, I am glad to hear that 🙂 About your issues,
    1. Check this https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/hairfall-causes-remedies/
    2. Fine hair is just how your hair is, embrace it! We have a lot of fine haired curlies around the world 🙂 You just need to learn how to protect it and treat it.
    3. That’s just how curly hair is. Some curlies can extend upto 1 week, others just 2 days. You can refresh your hair to extend it as much as possible https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/3-ways-refresh-curly-hair/

Hi Anjana! I just started transitioning to my natural curly hair and I got a routine going on. I was hoping this routine would help my get rid of my frizz and lack of dryness yet I still face those problems. 😔 I use the cantu curl activator cream with the olive oil ecostyler gel after washing my hair. I am confused with the quantities of each product to use or whether these top rated products are even working for me😭😭😭Please help me!!!

Hi, I’m transitioning from almost straight to wavy hair now.
Is this entire CG method supposed to be followed by someone with wavy hair or should there be any changes to it?

Also, do you by any chance know if the biotique green apple shampoo would work better as a daily cleanser (for oily hair and hairfall) or the wow red onion seed oil shampoo?

Or the aroma magic cleanser for oily hair*

    I haven’t used either.

    Hello Anjana,

Oh my gosh. Fell into your blog, how I don’t know, just 3 days ago. My hair has been like straw for years so I resorted to wearing it in a bun on my head for the past 5+ yrs to avoid the fate of the short haircut that so many curly girls dread. I kid you not, after just following your recommendations in the “Start Here” post my hair has completely changed. I first did the oil treatment, then washed as suggested (no wet combing), dried with the tee shirt method on day one. Then day two did a co-wash as suggested. My curls look amazing! Hydrated! Soft! Now I’m ready for a haircut to shape these beautiful curls.

My question is about using different products. Do you or have you mixed them up in your regular routine or do you stick to a product for long term? I’ve heard so many things about hair needing more than one product can offer. Do you recommend “sticking” to the products that work, on a regular basis?

Thank you for all your WONDERFUL research! IT WORKS ❣️

Wow, that comment made me smile so much!! 🙂
I experiment with many products but then go back to my staples when I want predictable hair 🙂 Not sure if that was your question Jennifer.

    Perfect, thank you!

    Hi,

I need to tie up my hair often due to the humidity/heat. What is the best way to tie up curly and thich hair?

    Hey i like ur hair.
My natural hair are wavy and frizzy
And i have starightened my hair 1 year ago and now u i have half staright and waves are coming back
And after seeing ur hair i want to try if i can reduce d frizz and get some curly look
What do u suggest how shud i start??

Hi, I want to ask why styling upside down doesn’t work for me ??

Please elaborate more. What do you mean by “doesn’t work”?

    Hi Anjana,

    1. Could you please share a video on how to refresh curls after the wash day? 🙂 It will help us understand better more than posts.
    2. Also, please do video on curly hairstyles that will make our lives easy🙂

    Hi Anjana,
I started my curly hair routine for the first time ever. Something isn’t working right. I used loreal series expert repair pack as my conditioner ( i had this left over as I thought my hair was too rough and needs some serious conditioning), cantu curl cream, and arata gel that comes in blue pack. I plopped and air dried after my bath. It looked great while wet. The gel though lost hold ( i mean it didnt feel too crunchy) when completely dry. And then i slept to wake up to a messy fuzz on my head. Pls advice. My hair is coarse in nature and quite thick( i think i mentioned before in my message- it is more wavy than curly – a typical mallu damaged hair look).

Thanks Anjana. I will keep going with the techniques suggested.

Hey Anjana, I have been following the CG routine for the past one year now, and have been using right products right method, and has seen great results. But very recently, my curls have are not forming proper clumps, these are very loose curls on the wash day. My hair looks like third day hair now on the first day itself. There is little bit of frizz, no dryness, but no clumping, very loose curls, and are not being formed and my hair is weighed down completely. I am sure the method i not wrong, neither are the products. I am also not seeing any crunch in my hair despite applying the gel in the end, so the need to scrunch out the crunch is also not there.

Can you tell me the possible reason for the same. Please help me with this. I have no clue why is this happening all of a sudden. Its been a month.

Hi Shruthi, when was the last time you clarified your hair and/or did a protein treatment?

I clarified my hair with pantene lively clean last week. And i haven’t done store bought protein treatment for some time now, as i am out of the stock. I did, curd + honey + oil and egg mask sometime back in my deep conditioning routine. If you want i can share my pictures with you, older and newer pictures.

Okay, will do this and let you know.

    Thank you Anjana for everything.

A query regarding gel, is it helpful in the process of repairing curly hair? Or is it only for styling? Can I skip it for a while, as I am at home and do not find it necessary to style my hair, can I just do a routine of oil–>shampoo–>conditioner–>leave-in? And deep conditioning with natural ingredients occasionally.
I’m a little concerned about applying products to my hair right now as it’s a little damaged and I want to just take care of it and work on reparation while I’m at home

I have been using CG friendly products for a while but still, my curls get frizzy and lose their pattern after drying.

“Great Tips! I would also like to suggest using this shampoo and conditioner from Natural Infusion. It really gives amazing results. Great tips for haircare!Simple and easy to follow”
