  • Difference between dry and damaged hair – Moisture v/s Protein
beautiful curly hair 3a curls

There was a time when I used to stare at salon shelves looking for products that “reversed damaged hair” because I just assumed my hair was damaged because it looked ugly :p. This was before I started embracing my curls. In one such salon, a lady told me – Your hair isn’t damaged. It’s dry. Me – *eye rolling*. If you are confused too, and do not know if your hair is damaged or if it’s just dry, let’s clear it all!

Dry hair is hair that lacks moisture or hydration. Moisture provides elasticity to hair.

Damaged hair is hair that has been robbed off its building blocks (proteins) due to heat or chemical treatments, low protein diet etc. Proteins provide the body to hair.

So now how do we tell the difference between dry hair and damaged hair?

1) The Strand test

* Take a strand of hair that has just fallen off your head.

* Hold the strand at both ends and gently pull it. Do not apply too much force or it will break nevertheless.

Results

Healthy hair – If the hair stretches a little before returning to its original length

Dry hair – If the hair doesn’t stretch or stretches a little before breaking

Damaged hair – If the hair keeps on stretching like a rubber band

This test can also be done when you are detangling your hair. Dry hair will just break off easily without stretching. Damaged hair will always stretch first then break because of the low structural protein content.

2) The Feel test

* Feel a single hair strand between your fingers

Results

Dry hair – tough, hard, brittle, stiff

Damaged hair – limp, soft, mushy

3) You can also check some signs your hair needs protein here – How Protein Helps Your Curls + Protein sensitivity

Solutions

Dry hair

Without moisture to provide elasticity to hair, your hair will feel like hard like steel wool. Look for words like panthenol, glycerin, honey, oil, butter etc. in the ingredients of your products. Clarify your hair to remove protein buildup. Avoid proteins in your hair products. You can also try some homemade treatments mentioned here – 3 homemade deep conditioning masks for curly hair

Damaged hair

Without protein to provide body, your hair will feel limp and curls will not be able to hold their shape or definition. Look for words like protein, amino acid, keratin, collagen etc. in the ingredients of your products. Also incorporate protein into your diet. Sheetal (Halo of Books)

This is an informative post Anjana !! My hair is damaged ! I’ll try your suggestion 😀

Good article. For a long time I thought both were same. Now I know my hair is dry not damaged! 🙂

Ya me too 😀

I have just done the strand test and have discovered that I have both dry and damaged hair…..
It would appear that I need to do two different treatments. What would you recommend I do first?

Hi Cass, it’s usually one or the other, not both at the same time. You either have too much protein or too less. What makes you think you have both issues?

I did the strand test on two different pieces of hair. First from the top of my head and it was obviously stretchy like a rubber band.
The second strand from the same area it had no stretch and broke very easily.
I maybe wrong……
My hair appears to be very dry and brittle towards the ends yet stretchy from roots to mid- length.

In that case do spot treatments depending on what the issue is in that area

Thank you Anjana.
I am thoroughly enjoying reading your blog. I will see how I go with the recommend treatments.

Thank you so much Cass 😍 🙂

Hii Anjana my hairs are not curling properly even after applying a good amount of conditioner and scrunching………..plzz tell what should I do

What’s your natural pattern? What products do you use? Do you have heat damage? Have you straightened your hair?

My hair type is 2C/3b actually I used to comb my hair a lot and used to straighten my hair temporarily. Now as I have came across ur blog I have stopped combing in dry. I use L’Oréal Paris smooth intense conditioner and Patanjali shampoo.

Do you have visible heat damage? Also include a gel

No I don’t have any visible hair damage……….yesss I will include gel……Thanku Anjana 😊

Hey Anjana. I have a query. I can’t prolong washing my hair for more than a day because my scalp tends to itch. So doesn’t that mean I have dry scalp? And if that’s the case, what products should I be using? And I have seen that I have to apply oil on a daily basis cause if I don’t then my hairfall tends to increase. So what are the specific ingredients I should be looking out for? It’d be great if you can help me out with this. TIA! 🙂

For getting frizz free hair, use the products mentioned in the kit. For scalp health, which should be tackled separately, check this https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/flaky-scalp-dandruff-dry-scalp-products-remedies/

Thank you 🙂

Hi Anjana.. for the last few weeks my hair turns frizzy as soon as I step out of the shower even while it’s soaking wet.. this was not the case sometime back and
I’m completely clueless as to why this is happening suddenly.. pls advice..

How much conditioner do you leave in? What products do you use?

I use wella elements shampoo and conditioner.. then cantu curl activator and eco styler pink gel.. I don’t leave in any conditioner I wash off everything..

Leaving conditioner is the biggest step to prevent post shower frizz

Oh! Then surely I’ll try it out and see.. Thanks a lot! 🙂

Ur blog inspired me to give up smoothening and embrace my natural curls.. Thanks a lot for sharing ur knowledge on curly hair with all of us..

I wash my hair thrice a week…once with sulphate shampoo and the other two times with sulphate free..

Lovely blog…want to improve my hair texture too will try the tests that you have suggested.

Let me know how it goes 🙂

Hi Anjana, can you please guide me a little regarding leave ins, like how it exactly works and everything. I have soft curls and my hair is super moody, sometimes there are prominent curls while otherwise it stays wavy and sometimes it’s straight. I just started my journey with CG method and I’m really confused with some of the things. Like what conditioners can I use for leave ins, and when should I apply it. Also, is it necessary to use a curl cream etc.

Leave in is for moisture, check this – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/10-types-curly-hair-products/
Finer and wavier hair types don’t require a curl cream. Have you seen this post – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/beginner-friendly-simple-curly-hair-starter-kit/#comments

Hi Anjana,
Love reading your blog … whenever I am stuck somewhere .. I come back to your blog… I tried the strand and feel test.. with the feel test I thought my hair was damaged but with strand test it stood out in the dry hair.. please help .. I read in your comments hair cannot have both problems either dry or damaged.

But I feel they are damaged cause they feel soft, mushy and with the strand test they stretched a litte and returned to original ..I have started the CG routine just a month back.

Try both moisture and protein 🙂 and see which result you like best

hey anjana, i have type 2b/2c hair i think.. but my hair falls from the roots, so do i have dryness or damage?

Hairfall is not related to either dryness or damage. Check this https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/hairfall-causes-remedies/

Hi Anjana
the top part of my hair is soft and silky, but the bottom part feel dry and crackly. Would you have any tips on what i could do to make it better? Also, i don’t really understand why my hair is wavy and nice when it is wet, but it goes waveless and puffy when dry? Anything will help!
Thank you so much and have a wonderful day!

Hey! Have you used heat or chemicals on the lower part of your hair? What products do you use and how much?

Hi!
No I rarely use heat tools on my hair……
I use l’oreal evercurl hydracharge shampoo and conditioner and then I add a bit of coconut oil in my hair and that’s all. I use abut a Quarter coin amount of shampoo and about a Quarter and a half amount of conditioner.
I also don’t know why my hair is sooo puffy. Thank you again for all your help!

Thank you! 🙂
Will try and see what happens :):)

p.s sorry for the double comment, i don’t know why it repeated itself……oops i probably pressed it twice 🙁

I have lost too many hair ! Volume has reduced to half .I too have curly hair. Can you suggest me home remedies to regain those lost hair ? Is it possible ?

I’m confused with the leave-in conditioners and hair creams! Can we use either one of them?

Yes

Any hair masks/ deep conditioning masks can be applied on oiled hair? Because without applying oil to hair can’t wash my hair because it becomes dry and frizzy.

The routine and products will help you, there will be no need to depend on oils for shine. You can get true hydration. It’s best to apply products on clean hair for maximum absorption.

Thanks for the reply, Anjana. So, after applying product on clean hair can I wash my hair with shampoo? Because I have oily dandruff and itchy scalp.. without shampoo if I wash my hair dandruff becomes double.

1st shampoo, then apply products on shampoo cleaned hair

Hi I think I have damaged hair but I’ve been using a keratin infused shampoo and conditioner since April. But recently my hair has started to feel mushy and super stretchy when wet and super dry when it’s dried. What can I do?

Try the gelatin treatment
