If I got a Rupee every time my readers asked me about solutions to hair fall, I’d have around 100 Rupees :P. Jokes aside, hair fall is a problem that affects a large portion of the population. So I thought it’s high time I write a post on it. Hope this answers all your doubts regarding hair fall.

First and foremost find out if you are having hair fall or hair breakage. Hair fall is hair falling from the root. Breakage is experienced when you detangle hair or brush it or pull it or manipulate it too much.

How Much Hair Loss Is Normal?

This is my hair after detangling with oil. My last detangling was 2 or 3 days ago

Losing 50-100 strands every day is normal. Once you stop combing your hair daily because of starting the CG method, the dead hair strands from each day don’t fall off easily until you wash your hair and just sit in between your curls. So when there is a gap of say 4 days after your last wash, almost 400 strands fall off all at once making it look like you lost a lot of hair on that day. If you are sure you the reasons for your hair loss are not in any of the 3 reasons mentioned in this post – Do hair products cause hair loss? , or if you have hair fall in clumps or if your hair is getting thinner over time, consult a doctor soon.

Hair fall in women can manifest in 4 ways

  • Losing strands from all over
  • Widening of your hair part
  • Bald spot(s) here and there
  • And very rarely, a receding hairline

Causes of hair loss

  1. Hormonal imbalances (for e.g.: Thyroid, PCOS, period bleeds but with anovulatory cycles).
    • Tests for PCOS – If your PCOS was diagnosed by ultrasound alone, it may not be an accurate diagnosis. It doesn’t always show on ultrasound. You need additional blood tests like fasting insulin, FSH, LH, Androgens (testosterone, androstenedione, DHEA-S), SHBG, Prolactin etc.
    • Tests for Thyroid – Don’t confine to just the TSH test. Also get your T4, T3, and Thyroid Antibodies tested.

A personal word from me : If you have tried many things for your hormonal issues and are still not your healthiest self, I’d urge you to read Lara Briden’s Blog and her book “Period Repair Manual“. Or even if you have regular periods but feel that something is not right – Are you really ovulating? It has changed the way I look at my body & health. In fact, it will help you with most of the below issues as well since they are all relating to a healthy body. I stumbled upon her blog trying to find a quick cure for my PMS and today (having read all of her articles and her entire book), here I am, improving my diet, lifestyle and health to correct my underlying problems. PMS was just the tip of the iceberg.

  1. Birth Control Pill – The pill is not the answer to all of your period problems like most gynecologists want you to believe. It does not regulate hormones. The periods you get are just “pill bleeds”, not real periods. (The same gynecologists will most likely scoff at most of the treatment ideas in Lara’s book which looks at the root cause and doesn’t put a band aid on everything.)
  2. Nutritional deficiencies like Iron, Magnesium, Zinc & Protein
    • Test for Iron Deficiency – Your serum ferritin should be at least 50 ng/mL.
    • Test for Zinc Deficiency – Your plasma zinc should be between 70-150 ug/dL. Zinc deficiency is very common in vegetarians and vegans.
  3. Hypersensitivity of hair follicles to normal amount of androgens (which is caused by inflammatory food like sugar, wheat and dairy and intestinal bacteria issues)
  4. Low Carbohydrate and Low Calorie diet
  5. Auto immune attacks
  6. Illness, Surgery
  7. Pregnancy & Childbirth
  8. Certain medications
  9. Sudden weight gain or loss
  10. Stress
  11. Genetics

Remedies for hair loss

  1. Check for the causes mentioned above and see if it applies to you. This is the most important step because without treating the cause, no external measures will work for you. For e.g if you have PCOS, get it treated. If you eat inflammatory food like sugar, wheat and dairy, avoid it. If you have nutritional deficiencies like Iron or Zinc, take supplements. If you take the Pill, look for alternative birth control options. Consulting a doctor is a good option. He will put you on medication/ run blood tests to check for underlying conditions. You can ask him for specific blood tests according to the above list.
  2. Make sure you are getting the right amount of these 4 nutrients for healthy hair
  3. Try oil massages to promote blood circulation. You can also check 7 ways to grow healthy hair.
Here is an oil blend that you can use for hair loss. Source.

Mix them all and store the oil blend in an airtight container. Take 5-6 drops from this blend onto your fingers and massage into the scalp for a minimum of 2 minutes every night. A warm towel can be wrapped around the head to aid absorption of the oils.

You can also check out The Ayurveda Experience Hair Oils for hairfall here.

Products like hair spas or shampoos cannot treat hair loss. They cannot penetrate into hair follicles to create any desired effect. Don’t fall for the “hair fall reduced in 1 wash” gimmick.

Be patient

Whatever be the treatment, you will start seeing results only after a few months. It may even take more than an year. Your hair has a telogen (resting) phase. A lot of your hair strands are already in the telogen phase now. Once your hair has entered the telogen phase, it is will fall off 1-6 months later, no matter what you do. Be patient and be consistent with your treatment. Stick with it. Stopping and starting many different treatments will not get you anywhere.

Thanks Sarada 🙂

I have a long hair so 5-6 drop won’t work.. do you mean to apply only at bald patches Or the whole scalp Or to the length too?

Only scalp

Wow…….this post is really helpful, thanks a tons, am a big fan of your hair on Insta ………
I was worried about my hair loss after turning into CG, I always thought it’s the products that caused it!!!!
But now I understood the theory behind a healthy hairfall/ normal hairfall and the routines of healthy hair.
Thanks again Anjana:)

I am glad Shree 🙂

Hey Anjana,
You ve covered almost every query a cg would have… thanks a ton… your blog is very informative. This comment is going to be long as I am new…I just started cg method from last week… very late and very new… till now I ve been taking the life out of my hair by combing… for refresh do we need to wet our hair everyday… I mean what happens if we skip a refresh routine… I ve just stArted scrunching and co-washing… I ve a long way to go but since I am used to doing something to my hair every morning and evening( read combing) a more detailed refresh ways (maybe videos, maybe step by step) would help us… hopefully I’ll have a frizz free and flyaway free hair someday… Maybe some tips to avoid premature greying for curly girls… as these hairs stand out much more pronounced for us…
Thanks again for this informative blog…

Refreshing is not mandatory 🙂 If your hair looks good, don’t refresh!

Just getting started on curly hair method. Having a lot of hair breakage during detangling. It’s distressing. Please suggest what to do.
P. S. – inspired a lot by your blog

My hair problem is that, when I don’t comb my hair or detangle my hair, the dead hairs are collected and it will be dropped down my hair. I have had such embarrassing experience in my class. So I can’t keep my curls without even hand detangling. What will I do? When doing hand detangling it do loss my hair definition.

Maybe just shake and ruffle your hair every morning so that the strands fall out at home itself?

But won’t it ruin my curl definition?

Just do it gently 🙂

Okay. Thanks😊

Hi. I started with cg method. However I am using oshea shea butter spa conditioner for conditioning and mama earth conditioner as a leave in….. after shampoo i got a lot of hairfall. i am even facing hairfall regularly. i have thyroid and pcod and have started on a healthy lifestyle. should i continue the cg method?

Yes Shreya, you may continue with the CG method as products do not cause hairfall

Hi Anjana, I am developing bald spots on the crown and the centre of my head .Due to corona i am not able to visit any doctor . What do you suggest i do till then ? I have been using cg friendly products among those mentioned in your blog. Initially it was fine . Since feb-march i am seeing that bald spots are emerging. I am really stressed that this will keep on increasing . I use home made coconut onion oil for massage, I drink 2-3lts water and eat only non oily homemade food. I take enough protein . My hairfall is not that much but the new hair are not growing out from the root .

Bald spots sounds like an internal issue Udisha, you should definitely get it checked with a doctor.

Hey!! I absolutely love your page, so much info!!
I had started my CG journey like 6 months back, it was going great, but now I have moved city and the water here is literally yellow rusty water and I am losing a lot of hair while detangling in shower and also once it dries up, hair comes out loose. I use giovanni tea tree shampoo and conditioner, cantu curl activator cream and giovanni gel. I use jessiecurl deep conditioner for deep conditioning once a week as my hair is very dry. If you can help me with some tips on how to manage hair fall and combat rusty hard water effects on hair, it would be great!

Hi Linsa, getting a shower filter would be the best option for the hard water. Check this for hair fall – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/hairfall-causes-remedies/

Love this post! So comprehensive yet so comforting.

Hi, Anjana can you recommend to me a few hairstyles I can do other than leaving my hair.

Hi Anjana,
My hair has started thinning since 2020 March,( since wfh started)…vitals and hormones look ok… What can be the reason… I have tried everything from home remedies to changing shampoos conditioners no styling more styling more prepoo, dc per week, protein treatment per month…eating egg almonds ..nothing seems to be helping.. to me it looks more of a breakage than shedding. Also each strand is becoming thinner..

Anu, have you checked all points mentioned in this post? That’s all that I have.
