Curly Hair FAQ - image 1502446897546-1 on https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com

Here are some of the frequently asked questions related to curly hair care, curly hair problems and hair products. This will be updated as and when reader doubts increase 🙂

1. “My curls look great when wet” – How to make them look good after they dry

I’ve had so many of you tell me this! That your hair looks great, defined and frizz free just after a wash. But as it starts to dry, it starts loosening and frizzing up. So how can we lock in the wet definition?
2 things – Right routine + Right products. If you have tried all the great products of the curly world, yet never manage to make your hair look good, your routine ain’t right – My curly hair routine. On the other hand, if your routine is quite good and yet you are not seeing results, it may be time to switch your products – Beginner friendly products – Curly Hair Starter Kit. Now what if your routine and products are both right? Check these – 16 mistakes you might be making in your curly hair routine

2. Won’t all these hair products damage my hair?

So much of cream and (especially) gel! Won’t all these chemicals damage hair? The word “chemical” might make you think of scientists in white lab coats making potent concoctions in test tubes. But that’s not entirely correct. Yes, those things are chemicals… but so are most other things. Almost everything is made of chemicals! That includes the water you drink, the oxygen you breathe, everything you eat, supplements you take, the cat you cuddle, and yes, YOU. Humans are made of millions of chemicals. The purest water collected from a Himalayan glacier is 100% chemicals (specifically, dihydrogen monoxide). Read more – LabMuffin : Natural vs. Chemical – Which Is Better?

Things that DO damage hair:

  • Bleach
  • Ammonia hair dyes
  • Chemical relaxers
  • Keratin treatment (the ones done in salons for “smoothing” the hair. Hydrolysed Keratin in your hair products is meant to add strength to your hair)
  • Heat
  • Products high in SD alcohol, SD alcohol 40, Alcohol denat, Propanol, Propyl alcohol and Isopropyl alcohol. (These are good alcohols – Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Behenyl alcohol, Cetearyl alcohol, Lauryl alcohol
    Myristyl alcohol)

Check this – Herbal, Natural and Organic Products – Are They as Good as They Claim to Be?

3. I have so much hairloss once I started following the curly hair routine

curly hair problems - Hair fall?

This is my hair after detangling with oil. My last detangling was 2 or 3 days ago

Losing 50-100 strands every day is normal. Once you stop combing your hair daily because of starting the CG method, the dead hair strands from each day don’t fall off easily until you wash your hair and just sit in between your curls. So when there is a gap of say 4 days after your last wash, almost 400 strands fall off all at once making it look like you lost a lot of hair on that day. More than that or if you have bald patches, that’s a serious problem and you need to consult a doctor. Check this – Hair fall – Causes and Remedies and Do hair products cause hair loss?

4. How to treat split ends?

Curly Hair FAQ - image split-ends on https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com

Hahaha

Split ends are caused by lack of moisture, excessive heat tools, hair dyes, brushing or combing (dry or wet hair), rubbing harshly with towels, sun damage, nutritional deficiencies, shampooing too often. Once your hair is split, it cannot be repaired. You can temporarily mask the split using products with PEC – Beauty Brains – Split ends remedy. The only real fix is to snip off the split end before it keeps splitting till your scalp.

To prevent split ends:

  • Shampoo less
  • Cowash instead
  • Condition after every wash
  • Limit heat tools, brushing, hair dyes
  • Use a tee for drying instead of a towel
  • Use hats and scarves if you are going to be out in the sun for too long
  • Correct your diet

5. My crown is so frizzy!

Read this – 7 Ways to Make Your Crown Area Frizz Free + Tackle Baby Hair

6. My curls become so tight after they dry – I want length!

Curly Hair FAQ - image curly-hair-shrinkage on https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com

(I used to wish for tighter curls and here you are wishing for looser curls ! Grass is greener on the other side and so we should start embracing what we have.) Shrinkage = Healthy hair. Your hair being able to shrink back to its normal state after being stretched down shows that they are in their healthiest natural state. Tighter the curls, more the shrinkage. A new rubber band comes back to its original state once the stretching is stopped. Have you seen the condition of old rubber bands that are permanently in the stretched state even without any force? They are sticky and gritty. Similarly, hair that doesn’t shrink back is damaged hair. So thank god for that shrinkage! But if you slightly want to stretch them, try leaving in more products to weigh your hair down, comb your hair through after applying products, do not scrunch and let it air dry. For tips on hair growth, check this – 7 ways to grow healthy hair

7. Should I wash off the cream and gel after application?

Nope. Only shampoo and conditioner are meant to be washed off. Some conditioner should also be left in(for moisture) and that’s how leave in conditioners came into being. Creams and gels give shape, hold, definition to your curls so you want them to remain in your hair.

8. I started the routine a few weeks ago but my hair is still frizzy.

If you don’t have heat damage or you haven’t chemically straightened your hair, you will start seeing results almost immediately (from your first wash routine!) which will continue to improve as you get better with the routine and get to know your hair better(so you can choose better products). A few weeks is a very short time to expect your curls to look really defined and frizz free. Mine took many months(though it does vary from person to person). Keep at it, be patient. You will see it one day 🙂

9. Is curly hair care expensive ?💸

If you already use a conditioner, you can start by using the conditioner as a leave in and just buying a gel. If you want to build a full kit including a conditioner, cream and gel, you can do it for under 1500 INR – Beginner Friendly Products- Curly Hair Starter Kit. You can also buy budget products – List of curly hair products in India (for every budget). You can read the testimonials of my readers under the Readers’Diary section of my website. A lot of them have really budget routines.

10. Is curly hair care time consuming?

I have a full time job and don’t get much time too just like most of you. Washing my hair and applying products takes me around 10-15 minutes. Then either put it into a plop or let it air dry while you do other things.

11. There are so many products! It’s confusing.

Check this Beginner Friendly Products – Curly Hair Starter Kit and this 10 types of curly hair products

12. How often should I wash my hair?

As often as you feel like. Once in 2-3 days is a good count. You can either co-wash or shampoo but remember to shampoo once in a while to prevent product build up especially if you are using silicones.

13. Should I repeat this routine every time I wash my hair?

Yes, if you want defined and hydrated curls. No, if you don’t mind frizzy curls for a day or 2 (for e.g if you are going to be at your home all day).

14. My curls open up and become frizzy a few hours after my washing and drying / My curls look good on day 1, but become frizzy by day 2.

You are not using enough product. Clumping of curls is brought about by moisture and products. Once all the water dries off, the clumps open up. So adding products will keep the curls intact. Leave more conditioner in, add more cream and gel. Also check these posts – 4 ways to sleep with curly hair and 16 mistakes you might be making in your curly hair routine

For day 2 hair, check this 4 ways to refresh curly hair

15. My curls get so hard and crunchy after using certain products, especially gel

That crunchiness is called a gel cast and if often desired to help your curls remain intact till they dry. After your hair is 100% dry, scrunch out the crunch to reveal soft curls. Explained here – Curly hair gels – Everything you need to know

16. My curls looks oily, greasy and flat

It could be because of any of these – you are using too much oil, you are using oils to style instead of creams, the creams you use (Beginner Friendly Products – Curly Hair Starter Kit) are too heavy for your curl type, you are using too much product, you are co-washing too often and not using a shampoo in between to clarify product buildup.

17. Are parabens harmful for your hair?

No, parabens are not ingredients that dry out hair or damage them in any way. They have no effect on hair whatsoever. Plus parabens are water-soluble and do not cause any buildup on hair. Hence they are technically CG friendly. Then why all the scare surrounding them? A study in 2004 found that there were parabens in breast cancer tissue – this study received a lot of media attention and suddenly everybody was scared. But there were many flaws in their study – no comparison was made with healthy tissue, and parabens were detected in blank samples without any tissue in them. Another study found that parabens were weakly estrogenic in rats. Many researchers say that they are so weak and used in such small concentrations that it should be of no concern. Parabens have been around for almost 100 years, are used everyday by billions of people, and there are lots of studies showing their safety. Yet there still hasn’t been a study showing a convincing link between paraben use and negative health effects. If you do want to avoid parabens, it’s a personal choice. There is a great article by LabMuffin on parabens – Should You Be Avoiding Parabens? The Science.

18. I see some of your product recommendations are Men’s products. Can Women use them?

Men’s haircare products have no special ingredients that make them exclusive to men. They are just marketed that way to be appealing to the male crowd. For e.g., a grey, blue or black packaging appeals more to most men than pink does. Another point is that products like hair gels were almost always used by only men in the past. So they are always targeted at men. There’s absolutely no issue in women using men’s hair care products and vice versa 🙂

19. Can I use silicone free products with sulphate shampoos? Can I use sulphate free shampoos with products with silicone?

The only point here is – Sulphates are required to remove silicone build up.

  • So silicone free products can be used with both sulphate free and sulphate shampoos.
  • If you are using any products with silicones, you would need to use a sulphate shampoo every few washes to prevent silicone build up.

20. Why is my hair only curly after I wash it? Why is my hair curly in the shower? Why does my hair curl when wet?

Wet hair usually shows what your true hair texture is, as it gets the right amount of hydration. So if it gets curly in the shower, you have curly hair (and not “straight frizzy” hair). Post shower, you may be drying it aggressively with a towel or brushing & combing it dry both of which disrupt the curl pattern. So how can I keep my hair curly after showering? With the right curly hair routine and products – Start Here

21. My hair becomes frizzy after I SOTC(Scrunch out the crunch)

This could be due to many reasons –

  • You have not applied enough styling product
  • Your hair is not 100% dry
  • You are aggressive with the scrunching out
  • Your hands are wet
  • Your gel doesn’t have enough hold/film forming properties

22. My hair feels sticky and hard even after I SOTC(Scrunch out the crunch)

This could be due to many reasons –

  • You have applied too much styling product
  • Your leave-in/cream is too rich
  • Your gel is too strong
  • Your hair was not wet enough while applying styling products

23. I started with the curly hair routine but I still see frizz and no definition.

Some curlies get it right within the 1st wash. For others it may take time. It may take a week, a month, many months – it’s highly individual. Be patient and stick with it, it will pay off in the end 🙂 I promise!

24. What oils or serums do you recommend for my dry frizzy hair?

You don’t need any oils or serums. The routine and products are what will give you moisture, lock the moisture in and give you defined curls – Start Here

Answer to Qs4 !!😂

Hehehe I know right 😂😂

Hi
I use dove shampoo and conditioner as of now and i still have a bottle or two to get done with. Is it okay if i use it until it gets over along with the styling cream and gel or is it necessary that i use only sulphate free shampoos when I’m using styling products?

Yes you can do that Angela

Thank you so much

can we have a review on the new curly hair product of “true frog”

Hi Anna, I am not in India currently. Will review it when I get a chance to try them out 🙂

is it ok to apply conditioner on the crown part on the scalp because of the frizz problem?

Hi, I tried CG friendly shampoos but it either ends up leaving a white residue or leaves my hair greasy in the middle. Currently, I am using plum shampoo. I don’t know what to do.

You can use sulphate shampoos Jaya

Hey! I have another question to add to this! Oops 😋 I have began using cg products since a month and Im witnessing a change in my hair texture. Its becoming curlier but its more of tighter curls. My hair is 3a and high porosity. I observed that when I used Orgx conditioner my hair was clumping well and with loose curls. Orgx is not cg friendly! Dont know if its the product impact or my routine. It’s just an observation so thought of sharing with you. Please enlighten me 🙏🏻

Hey Shruti..I am a little confused 😋 What exactly is your concern? Do you want loose curls? Do you not want to use silicones?

Yes! You have actually got it right! I want loose curls without silicones.

Hey Shruti, like I’ve mentioned in the post, embrace the shrinkage because that is your hair type 🙂 CG will give you tighter curls because shrinkage is a property of healthy hair and CG method is a very healthy approach to hair. I hope that makes sense 🙂 To slightly elongate curls, comb your products through and don’t scrunch after that.

Ok that sounds great! So relieved to hear that!! Will avoid scrunching this time. Thank you so much Anjana! Keep up the good work of inspiring so many of us! 😊

❤❤

Hi, I have smoothened hair. I want to go back to curls. My hair growth is very slow like a few cms in 3 months. Before straightening too it wad the same speed. Please help me to speed up the growth.

Hey can you give me tips on how to take care of curly hair in humidity???

can I use patanjali aloevera gel as a styling gel on my here as I am not very confident about other hair gels?

Aloe gels don’t provide hold

I have a question I’m seeing that my hair ends have very define curls bt in the middle they are loosen what would be the reason for that? Is it because I’m using sulfate and silicones?

Yes, or because of your hair pattern, or because of the routine and type of products and many more reasons!

Hey. I was wondering how you tie your hair up for the gym, I’ve noticed people have said not to tie your hair tightly in a bun or pony tail.

Brilliant dear

Thank you Kawalpreet 🌹 Havn’t heard from you in a long time!

Hi, I was wondering when you refresh Your hair 2nd Or 3rd day My soaker metod for ex, Doesnt water everyday to the hair dry it out?

Hi Sana, water = moisture(opposite of dry hair)..I don’t understand how water dries hair out 😐

Lovely blog! Simple and lucid explanations! You have answered every curly hair question I ever had. Thank you! 😀

Thank you so much Anjana :):)

How to shampoo nd condition my curly hair nd how nd when can I apply gel???

Really useful post, Anjana 🙂 Loved the answers to all the questions 🙂 🙂

Thanks Vidya 🙂 🙂

Hey! I was wondering what is a pre poo and how do you do it?

Hi Anjana,

First of all thank you for taking time and making such a nice blog, you are helping lot many people out there to embrace frizz and get back the curls eventually.
I had 2 questions to ask
1) Can you please suggest a good parlour for curl hair types in Bangalore, The most I tried are not aware of curly hair types even few branded ones around the city. I have heard that the curly hair needs to be cut only when its dry and not soaking wet else we loose length and most places I have visited wet it completely and then trim and the only solution they recommend for frizz is keratin treatment.

2) The second thing is since keeping hair wet for some longer duration is giving a head ache either cause of the sinus or since its a new process & taking time to get used to, it would be nice if you pls suggest a hair dryer and diffuser and about the heat settings.
Thanks and have a great day 🙂

Thank you Anjana 🙂
Will get back with some more questions if I’m lost in the CG journey .

Anytime 🙂

Hello Anjana,
I have the habit of oiling my hair before shampooing. Now that I am thinking of starting cowash does conditioner alone help in removing the oil on my head?
Thank you☺

Hi Sari – that depends on how much oil you use and how well your conditioner cleans your scalp. So give it a try and see 🙂

Hey anjana,
I brought shampoo and conditioner which are sulphate and paraben free but they have silicon. So how can i remove buildup couse by silicon as i avoiding sulphate 😕… Very confused

Hey Ritu.. there is unfortunately no other way!

Hi! Can u tell me some shampoo gels and conditioners that are avaible in italy?that would be helpful!

Hey Elena, I am not aware of the products and brands available in Italy. If you can share some products with their ingredients list, I can help you pick some good ones though 🙂

Hey anjana, I have fallen in love with your hair dear 😍 it’s like a dream to me.. Plz tell how to get fat clumps like yours? My curls like to mess with each other very much though
😥

Thanks Dipti! Have you started with the routine mentioned here – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/start-here/

How do you take care of your workout curls ?
All the sweat and messed up texture..
And how do you wear your hair while working out ?

It’s a real pain 🙁 I just refresh with some water post workout. I wear my hair up in a high pony

Started loosing thickness after using a shampoo for repairing heat straightened hair. Lots and lots of hairloss happening.Help me with it please!

Omg your blog is a life-saver for a 2c girl like me! I guess my question is if I have pretty damaged hair from straightening for so many years, will it take a while for my “desired curls” to come out? Will it be a longer process and what should I do until then?

2nd question: ever since trying to embrace my curls and putting down the heat products and just using my curly girl products, I get a lot of dandruff 💔😭 I clairified one this week but it just seems to be an ongoing problem. What should I do?

3rd questions: tangles tangles tangles. How do you combat tangles with curly hair without causing frizz? This is one of my biggest frustrations

Thanks so much! -Megan

Hey Megan! 1. Yes it will take time. Read this – Heat damage in curly hair
2. Do you wash on other wash days? Or do you use a sulphate free shampoo?
3. 2 ways to detangle curly hair – dry and wet detangling

I shampoo and condition every other day with a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. My hair gets oily fast 😣

Avoid getting conditioner and styling products on the scalp then

Hi Anjana! Thank you so much for all the information!
My hair is too fine and curly and my scalp becomes oily and curls become frizzy in 24 hours after washing! Can you suggest me good leave inns or creams which will help??

Hi… I have been using enliven conditoner for about 6 months along with b blunt leave in cream. Curls look better but my hair gets unbelievably tangled very easily. I have waist- length hair. Help.!

Hii Ma’am, please help me out!
here’s the thing… I’m a 20 year old girl, currently in college.. my hair has always been frizzy and all over the place( literally like Hermione) since the very beginning. i never gave a thought about it and have been treating it harshly, brushing it all the way and using lice combs( yes, that fine toothed comb). i had done enough damage to my hair when it started becoming really dry and frizzy and lifelessly limp. it was an year ago when i started treating my hair less harshly, using only wide toothed comb but still the problem remained. Until a few months back.. i searched online about hair n all.. and found my hair is somewhere between 2b-2cand3-a. it’s all messed up. i searched online about the healing and found out about the CG thingy and started following it, but here’s the deal.. a) my hair becomes all rough and really hard to touch after gelling, and when i scrunched them after drying.. they would fall off straight and separate. b) the sleeping habit? a total no no! idk y and how… whenever i have tied the pineapple thing while sleeping.. it always results in me getting restrained roots at the crown.. making me literally look like a pineapple for the rest of the day.(its like kahinse shock khaake aaye ho) c) my hair won’t stay! i’ve read everywhere u shouldn’t comb curly hair after it’s dry….. for day 1, it’s fine.. but after that… everyday without combing.. my hair gets knottier and i literally end up looking like a naga who haven’t combed since ages. i have even been to my classes looking like that just for the sake of maybe surviving this and getting somewhere with it. but it ended bad. d) some of my hair would curl up in tight knots… and some would be frizzy and lie here and there.. a total disaster!!
totally disheartened, i gave up the CG thing few months back and went back to normal life with ultra frizzy hair obviously minus the sulphate shampoo, the brushes, the thin bristled combs and plus lots of oil. Currently, my hair is a bit more under control than before and i m not following CG method.. but just after shower.. everytime… when my hair starts drying up and i look at them.. i fall in love with them hair which is curly and put together.. but the very next day i have to unwillingly destroy it all myself( by combing them) too afraid to repeat the disaster that happened with me earlier. so please, can u suggest me about the problems stated above? i would really like to folllow the CG method but these issues i’ve faced, no where on the internet i got any real solutions for them.
Thankyou for reading.. and i’ll be waiting for the response. please do reply. 🙂

Hey Parthivi 🙂 If you are willing to try the routine and products mentioned on the blog, and then come back to me with the results(most of your issues will be gone by then), I can help you with any more issues that you may have.

Hi,
I used the foll.
The blessing tree argan oil shampoo
Enliven coconut conditioner to rinde and leave in
Eco styler Krystal white gel.
After 2nd CG my hair is curly, rough and frizzy. I have wavy hair and would like to maintain the same.
Kindly advise.
Not sure how to send you a pic here.

Hi Anjana 🙂 Your blog has helped me a lot! Thank you. I do have a question that I would like to have your take on; what are my best options at preserving my curls if I work out a lot? My scalp tends to get very sweaty and makes me want to wash my hair after every workout. Considering I work out 5 days a week, putting in product after every wash doesn’t seem very financially sustainable. What would you recommend?

Dear Anjana,
I recently found your insta page and let me begin by saying that u have beautiful hair! And it’s amazing how u understand the needs of curly hair. I have struggled with most of the issues since a very long time in my life. Just a quick query, could u please suggest a good hair dryer with diffuser for drying curly hair? I have been looking for it to begin with a new routine (inspired by your posts obv) and I cant figure out which one to buy. It would be of great help if u could suggest one with its pros. Thanks a lot for reading😊 stay awesome!

Hi Anjana,

After using the said products my curls are more defined than ever, (3c type of curls) yet there is no shine and looks quite dull unlike yours. Also after day 2 or 3 refresh I feel that the scalp starts to be smelly. Also is there any way to increase the length as after shrinkage my length tends to look small. I have been using cantu, taft gel (rarely) and aloe gel (mostly). Still hair seems very dull.

Many thanks,
Sandipa

Mail me your hair pics. Check the tips in this post for a smelly scalp – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/how-to-care-for-your-curls-during-after-a-workout/. Embrace the shrinkage! It’s what your hair is 🙂

Hi there, I love your blog, i want to start with the transition, your blog is very helpfull. Please explain your night routine.
Thank you so much for all your advise , I love your hair btw, Hair goals!

Anjana mam I have a doubt …I ve been following ur page and the curly products u mentioned works for me …Currently am using oriflame coconut wheat conditioner , Cantu curl activator ,patanjali aloe gel ,and khadi shampoo …And also loreal intense smooth conditioner for cowash and acv to clarify ……I have this doubt that should I have to wash my 2nd or 3rd styled hair before I apply oil or any deep conditioner mask to my hair?

That’s not required. But if you are using store bought masks, it’s best to do it on clean hair and then proceed to use your styling products after rinsing it off.

Mam I use coconut milk and Shea butter mask as my deep conditioner …Does it penetrates to hair while there is still product on hair ?

Cococnut milk will to a small extent

“Livon Moroccan Silk Serum” i use this serum is it good for curly hair

No

Hi,
I have unruly and frizzy hair n little curly too.. they are super dry and rough . I have applied n tried almost all the sulphate free shapoo n conditioners… Currently m using Oriflames whet and milk shampoo and conditioner.. Also the hairs on front are so dry n damaged n untameable.. they are so dry…it looks really disgusting… I might not need curly or anything as such, I just need my hair to get soft n damaged free.. Also i dont wanna get an hair cut .. I just had 3 months ago…

Please Help😑 m super frustrated 😔

Have you started with the routine yet?

I also own curly hair. I started following your routine but i just want to ask that can i comb my wet hair once in a while with a wide toothed comb. Please do reply and guide me with your valuable advice.

Yes, wet hair can be combed, but do it very gently. Stop if there are any knots and pull them apart gently with your hands.

Thank you so much

Hi,
I have beautiful curly on the bottom of my head, but the curls on top are horrible. They are straight and frizzy. How should I fix that? I don’t have split ends, and I don’t shampoo often. Any advice?

What’s your routine like and what products do you use?

I wash my hair every day, but just with conditioner. I use a tee-shirt to dry it, and I use the OGX Quenching Coconut Curls Styling Cream to style my hair. I scrunch my hair when applying the cream. I use coconut oil at least once a week too.

thank you!

Hey Anjana.
I read your page. At first it was soo confusing on what to read, from where to start n all. But now onto the track.
Mine is a fine 2a hair type and Its now a little dry and frizzy after colouring. After reading your page i am planning to start with enliven natural fruit extract conditioner and a gel you mentioned for fine hair type. Is this fine for a starter? Is there any recommendations for the oil and shampoo to be used. How often should one oil their hair.
Adding to that i have hair fall issues due to dandruff. What to do with that? What should a starter take care of at the beginning?

Iam having curly hair..can u suggest want kind of hair cut is for curly hair..i cannot leave my hair open as it gets frizzy soon so i tie my hair usually..so pls help me..i hav ur kinda hair

https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/haircuts-for-curly-hair/. Also, have you started following the routine?

Hi Anjana

Hope you’re doing well ?

Just started my CG journey few months back .. wanted to ask – once my hair is air dried or diffused it feels rough after a few hours …. as in it lacks moisture. Currently I use as I am cowash and Shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie or as I am curling jelly and as I am leave in .. am I missing something ?

Do you scrunch out the crunch once it is 100% dry?

yes i do.. still it remains dry or less moisturized

How much of conditioner, smoothie and gel do you use?

Hi Anjana,

Just started my curl hair journey as few months back.

But I have alot of clueless hair and this result in flyaways and this result in lack of definition for my curls.

I am using OGX coconut milk shampoo . Enliven coconut and vanilla conditioner and Enliven argan oil gel.

Can you please help me figure out what can be done to tackle this

What’s clueless hair?

Many hair strands are not part of the hair clumps and there by lacks definition

Please suggest how to overcome this

What products do you use and what’s your routine like?

hiraChitChithiraChothira

I use OGX coconut curls shampoo, enliven coconut vanilla conditioner and Enliven argan oil gel.
I wash my hair on alternate days

How much of conditioner, leave in and gel do you use?

Is devacurl light defining gel better than ultra defining one?

I haven’t used LDG. It has less hold, if that’s what you want

Hey anjana…im a beginner to curly routine..i cut my transition hair today and all set to follow cgm..my hair is wavy with loose curls and now its very short..i read that for wavy its better to use mousse as the styling product..my question is how to apply mousse..should it be applied on air dried hair or like any curl cream u use in your video on soaking wet hair..please helpp..

Everything on wet hair 🙂

Hey!I am studying in chennai .Only hard water is available here. There is a stark difference in my hair texture after washing it in kerala(my home) and chennai. Can u please suggest some ways to remove water hardness or to reduce the damaging effects of hard water on hair?

Get a shower filter head. It’s available for around 2k on amazon. There are also some chelating shampoos mentioned in this – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/clarifying-curly-hair-what-when-and-how/

Hi, do you oil your hair prior to washing your hair every time you wash it? What is the optimal amount of oil to use on my scalp so I don’t have to shampoo twice to get it all out? Thanks!

I used to, but I don’t do it anymore. That would depend on your hair length, thickness and so many other things. The best way is to start with less and increase it till you have to shampoo twice and there you’ve found out the quantity for your hair.

Thanks, Anjana! Appreciate the help.

Hey Anjana! I’m going to India in a few days and am wondering if you have any suggestions for dealing with travel hair before, during, or after the trip?!

Which part of India?

Hey Anjana,
I tried co washing my hair using enliven conditioner. I could not wash them. My hair were drenched with d conditioner bt i dint know how to proceed. I tried following your video for co washing. Bt there was no lather that formed nor could i get the satisfaction of washing my hair. Please help.

Cowashing will not lather. That’s the whole point. So that it doesn’t dry out hair. Also I don’t have a video for cowashing, not sure what you are referring to. Check this article for more details – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/co-washing-curly-hair/

Hi Anjana
I have a problem . My hair only seems to curl up when there’s oil content, otherwise I dont get much curls even though my hair’s wavy . Can you help me out here please ?

What products do you use?

Right now I use only the L’oreal Smooth Intense Conditioner .

Hey! I tried the shea moisture conditioner – hibiscus and coconut, and also the Shea moisture Jamaican Black Castor oil deep conditioner. They don’t seem to give good slip or conditioning.

Is there any other brand/product that might give a shot?

Thanks in advance 🙂

Devacurl conditioners

I love my curls, and follow the CG routine, but of late they have become dry and frizzy. I read up on cysteine and wanted to know your thoughts on cysteine treatment–meant to hydrate and not remove the curls. Does it really work that way? I don’t want to get rid of my curls, and am not sure if the salon people are truthful or just lying to get some business.

They say these treatments will “strengthen” the hair or “infuse it with proteins” making us feel that it maybe something like the gelatin protein treatment that we do at home. But these are not strengthening treatments. They alter the hair structure by changing the chemical bonds in the hair so that hair appears straighter. Please do not fall for these tactics if you really want to embrace your natural hair. The regular curly hair routine and products will not be able to define or bring back your curls if you undergo these treatments. You don’t need these treatments to make your hair look good. Hydrated, frizz free, defined hair is just a matter of following a simple routine and using some basic products at home. These treatments are not going to “support” you in that.

Hi anjana,

Does bblunt high definition curl gel makes hair smooth and soft?i am letting my natural hair grow hoping to overcome the chemically treated hair.as the natural curly hair is growing, its fizzy and dry to maintain both the textures till i get a sufficient growth to chop off the treated hair.can this gel helps me out as leave in gel?please suggest me

Hi Anjana, my curls are not cumpling together, I’ve been doing everything in your curly hair routine (styling on wet hair upside down) but they just don’t cooperate. Besides, i think i have high porosity hair because when i apply products it just sucks it super fast!. I hope you can help me.

What products do you use? Also have you seen this https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/5-ways-get-curls-form-fat-chunky-clumps/

Hey Anjana,
My dry, frizzy, 2b/2c hair is reacting very badly to non-shampoo washes. The scalp turns heavy, greasy and grimy. Even I don’t feel like touching my scalp, let alone anyone else. My hair isn’t even oily, it’s extremely dry, really don’t know where the grime is coming from. My hair responds the same way to only water washes. And I feel like the scalp develops dandruff and dirt while washing coz it was clearly absent before! Ive even tried home remedies like lemon+honey cleanse… To no avail. Please help!!!

Cowashing doesn’t suit everyone – please get back to using gentle shampoos

Hi Anjana ,

I have been into CG method for 2 weeks now and its been 3 washes till . I can see my curls gets loose and dries out(Mine is 2C /3B pattern I believe ) . I couldnt see definition still . What might be the reason ? ( I knew its very short span I must be patient to get the desired result after all 😉 ) . Mine is not really thin but there is no voluminous curls .
Shampoo – Dove ( Diluted )
Conditioner – Enliven
Leave in – Cantu curl activator
Gel – Enliven
Please advise .
TIA

How much of each product do you use?

I use it according to my hair length

And how much is that?!

Palmfull

Send me some pics of your hair in my Instagram DM

Hey!
I recently came across your blog while looking for some products for curly hair.
I have extremely dry and frizzy hair and have already got smoothening done twice.
My hair is also very dense. So every time I wash them and upon air drying I end with lovely looking curls but after my hair are a 100% dry, the volume increases too.
I have a very thin face and so much volume of the hair doesn’t end up looking good and I ultimately comb my hair out of frustration.
Do you have some tips and suggestions which can help me maintain my curls with slightly lesser volume?

Have you started following the routine mentioned on the blog?

Yes. I’ve just started to.
However, I’m not using any gel or leave in product. I only apply mythic oil post wash.

Is yves rocher shampoo for bounces and curls good??

Good for what Feneena?

im gonna start your routine. so i was actually confused as to what shampoo, conditioner and gel i should use. my hair is smoothened and it has lost its volume aftr all the smoothening. also its very dry and frizzy. so can u also suggest me what ingredients should i look for in my shampoo, conditioner and gels and also what ingredients i shouldnt be using.

Have you cut off all the straightened ends?

No im yet to do that,. it has not grown much, just a few inches. i thought i would start the routine anyways so that the original hair is properly cared for and nourished as it grows.

Hi Anjana – how often do you wash your hair every week? Also, is the Devacurl No-poo supposed to be for daily washing? And are we supposed to use a clarifying shampoo once a week? I’m a little confused about the whole shampoo routine. Please let me know! Thanks.

2 times currently. You may use it if you really need to wash daily. Clarifying once a month is sufficient.

Hi chechy, I live in bangalore since 5 months and I experience huge hair loss due to change in water. I had a thick 3a curls when I was in Cochin ( my native). what will I do now for a healthy growth of my hair..

Hey Anjana!
How to deal with wavy hairs? Any suggestions? My wavy hair is so dry and frizzy once its dry after wash and how to moisturise my hair. What products should i start using to maintain moistured wavy hair?

Hey Anjana
I tried gelatin treatment for 5 mins and deep conditioned for 20 mins still my hair dint clump and formed no curls
My hair feel dry
I’m using L’Oréal smooth intense shampoo and conditioner

Please tell me what would have went wrong

What was your expectation from the gelatin treatment??

Hi,
Thanks so much for your blog!
I have three questions :

1) Top of my head is flat and the rest is wavy/curly. I have 2b coarse hair, high porosity. How do I get top of my head to curl up like rest of my hair ? I don’t like using too many products ( Use enliven conditioner and Taft gel right now )

2) Frizz! I don’t know what to do about this. I tee dry my hair in a plop and then let it air dry

3) My hair is too dry. I have tried using more product but it still becomes dry after few hours of wash

Thanks 🙂

The right routine and products will take care of frizz
How much conditioner do you leave in?

Hello. I just started my CG journey yesterday. I used L’oreal smooth intense as the conditioner and leave in and set wet gel to style. But I go to a college where I have to put my hair up in a bun daily so had to do that today so obviously curls got disturbed. But my question is that do I need to apply creams and gel if I’m not planning on leaving hair open. Plus any tips on increasing hair volume. I have outrageous hairfall plus dandruff so basically very less volume. So will using an anti dandruff shampoo everytime I wash be an issue? Thanking you. Shreya.

You can skip the products if you’re not planning on leaving your hair open
You can use anti dandruff shampoo on the scalp only
https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/hairfall-causes-remedies/

My hair type is 3a & 3b.

Now the thing is which I want to know is am a daily head washer with a slightly oiling everyday.
1. How many times should I go through this CG process a week?
2. If it’s not an everyday hair wash routine, what should I do for it.. coz I can’t stay one day without a hair wash, coz it starts getting flakey (really bad) and itchy 😟.

Oiling daily will require daily washing to prevent greasy dehydrated curls – which isn’t the best thing to do. Have you seen a doctor about your itchy scalp?

Hey i have always heard that hair gel leads to premature greying
It is true? That is what is holding me back from buying a gel… Also m a beginner so i cant buy expensive gels

Hi, I am a huge fan of your page and have been following it for few months now ( so a new fan). I am trying the method you have been suggesting except for conditioning my hair. My hair type is a bit weird. I have straight hair at the crown and below I have curls. Because of which if I comb my hair my hair looks bushy and weird, if I don’t then looks like someone who has not showered for ages. So how can I fix this problem? Also my scalp gets very oily after 2 days of washing. Currently I am using Hask Coconut oil replenishing shampoo with Hask Coconut water conditioner. Let me know if you have any recommendations for the shampoos.

How to keep the curls safe while sleeping.

Hey i followed ur routine however my hair feels weighed down and oily but there are still frizzy hair! I don’t really have curly but wavy hair

What products did you use?

Garnier ultra blends shampoo and conditioner
Garnier ultra blends leave in conditioner
Schwarzkopf taft gel
And a pea amount of aloe vera gel coz hair was frizzy

Skip the leave in and use only the gel

Hi Anjana, how are you? Would you be able to suggest a mousse for me that I can get in India? That’s CG friendly or atleast close.. The whole leave in, activator and gel routine is weighing my hair down big time! I’ve never been sure if I’m 2b/2c/3a because it has been all of those at different times and weathers. But I’m basically from Chennai so humidity is way over the top all the time!!

For humidity, skip leave in. Gels shouldn’t weigh down your hair. Which one do you use? Also is your hair fine or coarse?

I have fine hair.
I’ve actually tried a number of combinations that haven’t really worked to achieve those rhythmic curls. It’s always sort of messy looking.
1. After the shampoo+conditioner/co-wash routine, I use the Cantu curl activator followed by the Giovanni styling gel (strong hold) on dripping wet hair and then squish dry it with a tshirt. In this step, I still have some amount of frizz when the hair dries out. When I switch tshirt drying with diffusing, the crown ends up flat.
2. After the shampoo+conditioner/co-wash routine, I use just the Cantu curl activator on dripping wet hair and the same result as above happens.
3. After the shampoo+conditioner/co-wash routine, I use the Cantu curl activator or both the Cantu activator and the Giovanni gel on tshirt squished damp hair and this sort of works better than any other option.
What am I doing wrong? What can I do differently? I was wondering if it would work better if I gave up on my current routine and switch to just squish my damp hair with a mousse and be happy with that!

Whoa Cantu is too heavy for fine hair. Like I said, skip leave in, Use only a gel.

Ah okay! Will try that out.. Mousse won’t work?

Why don’t you give the gel a try and if that doesn’t work, we’ll talk about mousse 🙂

Hi Anjana, Inspite of your detailed explanation I have another doubt 😁. Can any conditioner be used as a leave in too ?or only Silicon free can be used as leave in ? Or only should I use conditioners mentioned as leave in’s ?Thank you 😃

If you are using silicones in your routine, you can use any conditioner as a leave in

Hi anjana! What do you think about keratin treatment not followed by flatironing.. my hair is wavy n i always wanted that polished smooth look..

My waves look limp at ends, what kind of haircut should I go for? I was thinking to have fringes in front to reduce flattening.

Ya that’s a good idea. Also get some layers

All the ideas which reduce crown flattening lead to crown frizzing and vice versa.

Ya that’s why I’ve mentioned in the posts that you need to find a balance between the 2

Oh. Hit and trial

Yes 🙂

what out an hair mousse? can we use it instead of gel??

Yes, if your hair is wavy or fine

I’ve 2b3a curls (SUPER THIN) with normal porosity and I’ve dandruff prone hair. I’ve been doing CG method but seems like it is not going to help me with dandruff. I’ve been experimenting since last one year and I need to know what kind of routine should I follow! How often to wash with sulphates and what would be best for my dandruff prone hair?

Also I’d like to add that CG girl worked beautifully on my hair texture. And after reading your blog… GOD I was relieved that I could actually use sulphates _/\_ just want to figure out how often should I wash

That’s something you would need to experiment with and see – start with once in 2 weeks and increase or decrease depending on how your scalp feels.

Hii Anjana,
I have fallen is love with your blog recently and started my curly hair routine about 4 months back. But recently I have started swimming everyday and that’s why I really need your tips, do’s & dont’s for everyday swimming.
As putting on the hair cap frustrates the entire objective of keeping the definition of curly hair…I don’t know how to keep my hair healthy and in good shape at the same time with daily swimming routine.

Hey Amruta! I have a small note for swimmers in this post – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/clarifying-curly-hair-what-when-and-how/
Unfortunately I don’t have any other tips 🙁

My hair is very dry curly hair .. I used blunt gel which u recommended in ur gel list .. but my hair is dry after applying the gel ☹️.. what should I do

What other products do you use?

Hii this is karuna ..I have very dry curly hair .. I used matrix biolage ultrahydrating shampoo, enliven coconut conditioner and bblunt gel oh! Natural hold gel but nu hair is still dry and frizzy 😭..what to do ?

What’s your curl type, coarseness and length? How much of each product do you use?

Hi! I’ve just discovered your blog and it is wonderful! It’s been a confusing time for me ever since i’ve started my routine months ago, but i feel like all my questions have been answered here!
I just have one worry that i wish you can give me the answer for: I wash my hair twice a week, use curly hair friendly products, but ever since I’ve stopped detangling outside the shower my hair has become too tangled to leave it down, so i always keep it up. As soon as it dries, it becomes too frizzy and tangled. what should i do? some suggested i use a wide toothed comb to detangle, is that hair damaging?

Thisuri Muthukumara

Hi.. I’m thisuri from instagram
Actually my hair was pretty long and I badly wanted to get it layered so last year in August I got it layered finally from a salon for the first time in my life.. So basically I had colored ends so when the layering happened the colored ends wer all cut… And now my hair is not curly as before.. And I don’t understand why… Like when I take a bath that day some of the curls are there but once I sleep and wakeup the curls are gone almost wavy-straight..And I’m trying to find out why that happened and whether it’s normal… Cuz I feel like when I had colour in my hair my curls wer very very defined and like everyone use to praise and what not… Yeah if I want to relate my hair is almost now like urs in ur” 2016 pic ” up in the chat has this happened because of the layering?

Hey anjana first of all your hair is really beautiful.
Secondly, I always had kinda wavy curly hair so in the past 1 year I did salon keratin treatment twice and I genuinely regret it now but as of now it’s my transitioning hair right so I wanna know where should I start as in I’m confused with my curl type itself. Kindly help.

Hey Anjana! I kind of tried to follow the routine but there are 2 major problems I am facing:
Firstly my hair lacks root volume
Secondly my curls look somewhat very messy
I don’t really think I can go out with them so I had to comb back my hair to that frizzy ball .I had no other option !!
HELP ME PLEASE!!!

Thank u soo much for responding. I will definitely try them out and let you know!!!

Hi Anjana,

I came across your blog and instagram a week ago and I love it so much! I tried the STC method twice now but I don’t know why my curls still aren’t clumping very much. Some clump and some do not. My curls used to be much curlier. I used to have it about 3-4 inches below my shoulder(when curly) and it looked 2c/3a with a lot of helix shaped curls in the front.

I have been CGM for over 5 years. I rarely ever use any heat on my hair. The one time was when I diffuse, but its usually cold air, or if im in a big rush, low heat for 1-2 minutes then a blast of cold air for a another 2-3 minutes, and repeat until dry. However, my hair seems to always lose its curl patter when I diffuse unless im lucky that day, and I’ve only been lucky about twice so I generally air dry pretty much every day unless I’m forced to diffuse because I have to leave. I diffuse with the devacurl diffuser. However my curls have lost a lot of its shape and my helix curls only in a few strands in the front of my face, and I get either stringy loose curls or more wavy than curly hair through out the rest of my hair.

Original routine

Deva curl no poo original cleanser (only on the scalp)

Deva curl One condition: I dont put it directly on my scalp because I dont have a lot of hair. The strands are thick, but the amount of hair is not a lot on my head. I usually put the conditioner starting mid head down to the bottom of my hair and detangle with a wet brush. Then fully rinse out all the conditioner.

Devacurl Coconut cream styler: I rake this through soaking wet hair while standing up straight. I keep my hair wet with a spray bottle and spray my hair if it starts to dry.

Devacurl Ultra Gel/ARc Angel gel: I rake either gel over my curls (spraying with water to keep them wet) while standing up straight and then I scrunch my hair once the gel has been raked through.

Once the products are in I scrunch my hair by leaning to each side and then also upside down, scrunching up to the root. Then I plop for as long as I can, which is usually about 30-40 minutes, 15 minutes if im in a rush. Then I air dry and do not fluff until completely dry. My hair takes about 5 hours to dry, sometimes longer like 6-7 hours. Then I fluff. Sometimes the curls stay nice all day, but a lot of times it does lose its curl patter after a few hours after I fluffed. I have not ever had good 2nd or 3rd hair day. Generally I just lightly do a side braid or up into a bun. My curls have been stringy for years and I couldn’t get it to clump ever, so I thought it was just me and my hair until I started losing my curl pattern after growing it out and searched for a way to revive my curls.

Routine after seeing your blog. #1

I co-washed my hair with Devacurl one condition. Got out all the tangles

Did a rice water rinse (I had made this earlier before I read your blog so I decided to use because I didnt want the water to start fermenting if I waited until the next wash day. It was the first time trying rice water rinse) left rice water on for about 5 minutes.

Deep conditioned with Devacurl Heaven in Hair for about 30 minutes with a shower cap on.

Rinsed out deep conditioner with my head upside down. STC with Devacurl one condition, adding water if my hair isn’t soaking wet while im squishing. Then STC but with the Arc Angel gel.

Plopped for about and hour with t-shirt. Then let air dry. Then when fully dry, I fluffed and scrunched the hair.

My curls weren’t a lot curlier nor did my helix curls return, but the back that had lost all its curls before had a slight wavy shape which I was really happy about because a wave was better than the weird almost straight shape it had and there was a good amount of clumping. I was super happy!

#2 Try (trial 1 was on a Thursday morning, trial 2 was on a Saturday morning)

No Poo deva curl Original formula cleanser only on scalp

One conditioner- detangle with a wetbrush, fully rinse out.

One condition with head upside down. Use a wet comb to even the application, then STC. No more combing after this step.

Devacurl styling cream (different one that I normally use. I usually use the coconut one but the sales person kept insisting the coconut was too heavy for me so I was trying the styling cream instead of the coconut one.) STC style application.

Arc Angel Gel, STC style application as well.

Plopped for 30 minutes.

Clumping when wet looked great but then 4-5 hours later when air dry was done, I fluffed it out and my hair was just wavy with the hair at the bottom have some small helix curls, but not much clumping and a lot of waves. I dont know what to do!! My hair is about about a about 2 inches higher than waist length level when the curls are curly/wavy. I want to grow out my hair and have it curly at waist length, but the curls are not forming right now and im so frustrated that my hair look wavy, when I had so many curls before. Is it my hair? is it my products? do I need layers? Please help 🙁

Hey Lala, is the loss of curls after trying out my routine?

Hi Anjana,

Thank you so much for responding! Yes, after I tried your routine I let it air dry, but after it’s fully dry the curls slowly lose thier curly shape. There’s not really any frizz but the curls aren’t staying clumped and curly.

Maybe your earlier routine suits you best

Hey! Is a diffuser suitable for type 2a wavy hair?

Yes Nancy

Heya!
I am super obsessed with those juicy thick curls that you have….I have visited your instagram handle and you look wonderful with them…my curls are way more thinner probably because i rake in the products and not scrunch them. Scrunching doesn’t distribute the products properly in my hair and then there are some strands which misbehave and loosen out after wash.Is there any other alternative to get thick curls like you do??
PS:my hair is not as thick as yours! 😉

Thanks☺

Review about plum shampoo, conditioner and mask
Also marc anthony hair products are they CG friendly ?

I haven’t used those products Vandana. Please post ingredients list if you want to know if a product is CG friendly.

Hi, I am trying to follow your suggestions. I use cantue Curl shampoo, conditioner and live in conditioner. But my Curl doesn’t hold long? It gets freezy after the wash day. Is it necessary to use styling products in order to hold my Curl for long??

Many thanks in advance

Yes Tirna

Hi
What are your opinions on using Jamaican Black Castor Oil on Indian hair

You could 🙂 I haven’t noticed any great results pre pooing with it, but many others have

Can you suggest me the hairdryer comes with diffuser for curly hair,?

Hey! I am facing few more problems.Firstly the hair near the crown is not curling up or even if it does it opens up in 3 to 4 hrs after wash .Secondly my curls specially near the nape open up by the time its day 2, and then there is lots of frizz!

Hey Aarushi, check this https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/10-ways-prevent-crown-lying-flat-curls-roots/
How do you protect your hair while sleeping?

I use a satin pillowcase and leave my hair open while sleeping.
Tying them anyways makes the curls go out of shape somehow!

It has been about 9 weeks that i have started using the CG method. My hair is curling up more than before and i love it but then there is soo much of frizz! Then there are loose hair strands dangling out from the curls.I tried altering the amount of conditioner and tried sleeping with a bonnet but it still does not help.I understand i cannot get completely frizz free curls but is there a way out that will make them look less frizzy and more defined? [Also my hair looks very dull]
Could you please help me out with this?

What conditioner and gel do you use? What’s your curl type, coarseness and length? How much of each product do you use?

Hi Anjana! Reading your blog and following your routine did wonders for my hair! Thanks so much for the good advice! I have a question maybe you have a tip for me : I have long (mid back) wavy/curly hair and I always let it hair dry (during evening and all night) but in the morning they are never completely dried, Is there a way to wake up with hair dry without blow drying? Thanks! 🌷

When I do that, I wake up with damp hair too 😀

My hair is of medium length and my curl type is 3a and my hair width is medium neither coarse nor fine.
I use the matrix biolage conditioner and also use it as a leave in and the aussie instant freeze gel.
I use a lime sized amount of conditioner and a little more of gel.

I could not reply to your above question somehow and hence posted it separately.

Aarushi, please send me some pics of your hair on Instagram (and tell me that I had asked you to send, for context :P)

Hey Anjana, I have really bad dandruff. I think my products are causing it, thought of checking with you before I discontinue them.
Shampoo- mama earth or body rainforest
Conditioner – argan oil conditioner xpel or matrix
Curl cream- cantu mostly or Shea butter curl cream
Gel- devacurl
I stopped plopping, as my dandruff become worse with it. I have been rinsing hair with apple cider vinegar for 3 weeks now…but no difference
Have stopped oiling now

Hi Ankita, Products suiting(or not) is very individual. Try skipping the products 1 by 1 and see if any of it improves your dandruff

Hey Anjana,
You have done a great job with this blog, inspiring so many curly girls who used to hate their hair.
I have been trying to follow the cg method on and off for the past one year. But due to time constraints it never worked out.
But this time I decided to stick it out as it will take around 2-3 months to get the desired hair texture.
I used to wash my hair everyday with shampoo. Otherwise it starts smelling(I have dandruff and oily scalp).
Since 2 weeks I have started co washing with enliven conditioner . Shampoo once a week with Kaya anti dandruff shampoo. N post co-wash I apply ogx anti-frizz hydrating kukui oil. But my hair again has started to smell by the end of the day. Please give some tips .
Thank you

Your scalp will take a couple of weeks to adjust to the “less cleansing” Induja

Hey. After one month shampooing only once a week.
I am using enliven conditioner for co-washing daily, followed by tresemme biotanique nourish n replenish as conditioner as well as leave in . Followed by ogx antifrizz kukui oil.. my hair feels great.. but doesn’t look that great.. they are still frizzy to look. What to do now??

Have you tried using a gel?

Patanjali aloe vera gel. After wash on wet hair

Aloe gel doesn’t provide hold. Please use a gel with hold. Check this for my recommendation – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/beginner-friendly-simple-curly-hair-starter-kit/

Alright thanks a lot

Hey Anjana! I am following your hair care routine for 2 months now and it has changed my life! I wanted to cut my hair short..I am a little scared about it as I am new to Bangalore, I am staying at the IFIM Hostel in electronic City, can you suggest me a good salon near by( BBLUNT is a little far away)

Hiloni, I haven’t got my hair cut from any salons at e-city

I will in a humid place and regularly workout.. hence my hair gets wet (sweat) almost everyday. I don’t want to wash my hair daily, but left with no choice… its very difficult to maintain the curls and my hair goes dry. I can give up my workout either.. Do you have any suggestions?

Hii
I am unable to control frizz during the monsoons. What products should i use or what should i do to control frizz ?

Hy mam,
Myself Bhavya..i tried out ur curly hair routine n its amazing…bt still i need little more help from you.. actually my hair is too rough n its starts breaking and am getting a lot of split ends..so my hair stylist suggested me to do keratin treatment..bt i dont want to loose my curlys…is there any alternative treatment to give my hair protein and keep them storng and healthy??

When to comb after or before wash ? And comb regularly or we can comb after 2 to 3 days .

Hi Anjana,

It would be great if you could leave a few tips on how to manage your curly hair while you travel to work everyday (especially if you’re a person who travels by bike).

No matter how well i maintain, going on a bike just makes my hair frizzy and unmanageable.

Also, I’ve been following your curly hair routine and it has been amazing. I’m finally falling in love with my hair.

Hi Varsha, if I am traveling by bike or auto, I usually wrap my hair with a scarf

Those are some great hair care tips! I will surely follow a few of them. Keep writing such detailed blogs. These blogs help working women like me who need quick solutions to fix hair problems

Hi Anjana,
Thinkni know what my prob is.
Enlivening conditioner for cowashing and S leave in. And then i use set wet cool hold.

I think the enliven conditioner is not taming the flyaways. And when i use this cond without CG it makes the hair extremely frizzy.

Pls advise an alternate budget free product, until i start to make flax seed gel at home… i think i can co wash and directly apply gel…

Pls advise

Thanks. Have experienced the samecwith enliven conditioners ??

By the way, does himalaya have any sulphate free shampoo.. the baby shampoo??

I didn’t understand your 1st question.
Himalaya does not list the full ingredients list https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/read-ingredients-list-not-product-claims/

thanks for making this blog, it’s so helpful! I’ve been following your hair care routine, and now my curls are locked in but I have one question – when my curls dry the bottom off my hair always seems more voluminous than my crown (which is still pretty curly), giving it a sort of christmas tree look lol! is this something I can fix with hair care products or a hair cut? thank you!

Haircut! This post talks exactly about the Christmas tree look – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/haircuts-for-curly-hair/ 🙂 Haha, I like this new comparison !

Hi Anjana 😊…i go through all your posts i like the tips n i do follow them, but what always comes in my mind (may b seeing the readers results) is that does the outcome of the products change my hair type? i mean is it to turn my hair to 3B or so…i have 2C Type and i absolutely like it!.. Just not sure how to manage and what products to use. 😅

i m currently using enliven conditioner…can i use it as live-in too? couz my hair is absolutely dry! 😒…or can u suggest me any other budget friendly product that would give me loose/wave like curls…please!

Yes you can use it, Yamini. Check this for more recommendations – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/beginner-friendly-simple-curly-hair-starter-kit/

Hi Yamini, The routine and products will not change your natural pattern. But it will bring out your true pattern which may well be curlier/wavier and you don’t know about it yet.

hi anjana…nice blog..have been searching for a while for something which i can follow and my search stopped when i found ur blog..my question is about co washing.. how often should i do it..i mean u said shampoo once in 2-3 weeks . i do it once in 10days… between these if i felt my hair was dry or frizzy, should i just wet it with water and use conditioner? also , should i wet my hair with just water everyday?

Hi Tejaswi, you can cowash in between your shampoo days.

Hi anjana
My hair type is 2aor 2b I’m using enliven conditioner as Co wash and for leave in I’m using requile my concorn is I’m getting good curls but it’s all very thin thin curls and after drying the curls feel so dry and frizz can I use diffuser for volumn please advice use flax seed gel sometimes

Yes you can use diffuser for volume

Hey,I am trying out this blog recently after my friends vouched for it.(literally)
I had one query, most of these videos and routines, you don’t tell how to dry it,other than air dry…or diffuser.so are you suggesting to leave the hair as such (no diffuser with me as of now) and let it dry and run the risk of a cold…or is towel drying ok .. wouldn’t that beat the use of squish and condish with the products and all. .

When I don’t use a diffuser, I just let my hair dry naturally . Check this post Shilpa – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/how-to-dry-curly-hair/

Hi Anjana
I just recently started my curly hair journey and I have a few doubts if you could help with them please.
1. I have a mix of 3a, 3b curls and my hair is very fine or thin. I have very short hair as of now. So when I do the STC method of conditioning I get bigger clumps and my hair looks very sparse with gaps. But the good part is I get my crown area also to curl with this method and it’s not lying flat and straight.
But if I follow the raking or combing method then I get smaller clumps, but my crown area is very flat and straight without any curls. It doesn’t look very good.
I don’t understand how can I fix this. Could you please help.
Also I wanted to know if the STC method gets the conditioner to the roots and weighs it down?

Hi Kavya, Maybe try STC 1st to get the crown to clump and then rake the bottom part of your hair?
No, I don’t think STC does that – but would depend on how you are doing it too 🙂

I recently started your curly hair routine,my hair is primarily wavy, was nicely straight…but now, curly here, frizzy there.
My primary issue was frizz
Seem to still be struggling with it,rather I don’t know how to tame that.
Cos after gel application, once it’s dry,it’s frizzy again(maybe I scrunched it before gel cast dried.maybe)
But still frizz was the primary reason y I adopted this cg method.
The other alternative was hair treatment.
I’m messaging you cos u said u don’t mind your silicones and sulphates once in a while.
And silicones help with frizz don’t they.
So u suggest using them during the cowash sessions or normal hair wash sessions or deep conditioning sessions.
Although now,the length of the hair seems comfortable in curls.and looks relatively neat
The crown is still an issue..the crown area is frizzy like anything
Would love it if you could throw some light on how to manage that

Hi! It’s been a month and a half since I began my curly hair journey. I read your blogs before starting my new routine. The frizz has reduced and they do get curlier after wash. Leaving my hair open makes them frizzy and tying them up disturbs the curl pattern. How do you suggest I manage them? I would really love to hear from you. 😊

Hi Sakshi, your hair quality will improve with time and when you learn better about what routine and products suit YOUR hair the best 🙂

I wish to share my story and it will be really grateful if you could give me suggestion on my problem. I had curly hair but all of a sudden in September 2019 i started having major hair fall followed by dryness n frizziness after few months probably jan 2020 my hair turned straight and oily.
Its so shocking for me that my curly hair have turned damn straight.

Since feb 2020 i have been following CG method and other methods mentioned above still i dont have any luck in having my curls back.Pls suggest me what should i do to have my curls back

Hi Mehak, did you do any chemical treatments?

Hi anjana

I havent done any chemical treatment on my hair

Mehak, it then sounds to be like a hormonal change. Unfortunately nothing can be done about it.

Hi anjana

Good news is i have started getting my curls back recently without any medication or any sort of technique

However they are not proper curls but they are beginning to go curly from above from ends my hair are straight only

Any suggestions to make them curly from ends also?

As the change is natural, you will just have to wait 🙂

Is it necessary to apply product every time you wash your hair? On days when I am not leaving the house I don’t need to do my hair and do not like to hair product in my hair if not necessary.

That’s right Jordan, you only have to apply styling products on days you want defined curls. If I am sitting at home, I just shampoo and condition my hair.

Hi Anjana,
Beginner in CGM. During first wash , I tried to do squish to condition with my sulphate free conditioner, after cowashing. Hair seems seperated. But hair clumps are nor formed. Will it take time? Do I need to try finger coling in next wash?

Also my hair volume is very less. Is it the reason for less hair clumps

Hi Sree, try adding more conditioner and/or water. Yes, low volume can also result in less clumps.

To get well defined curls, Should I do finger coiling along with scrunching?

That’s not required, but if you find that finger coiling helps, there’s no harm in doing it 🙂

Just wanted to ask , can I use cantu shampoo and conditioner for my hair, as my hair is highly damaged because of hard water.. it’s rough and frizzy.. because of breakage the length and volume both is reduced. Pls suggest something. How can i control my hair fall and damage.

Can we use a conditioner with silicons for deep conditioning? there is no harm na?

Hi Gupti, that depends on if or not you are following a strict CG routine

I have 2 questions:
1. How do i maintain my curls while sleeping? – Without getting too many tangles 🙁
2. How do I tie/maintain my hair during workout? Does putting a high bun ruin the curls?

Okay thank you!!!

hi my hair tends to be very frizzy and i think it is medium thickness. When I wash and put in products like curly ellie condtioner and kinky curly gel and diffsue it my hair has curls that mix of 2c and 2b and curls but after next day my curls don’t hold their structure and become loose waves how can i hold the curls and keep them defined ?

Hi Anjana, love your blog and I recently started following your IG account too! There’s a lot of useful stuff here, relevant for the Indian curlies especially with regard to products. I have been into CGM for a little over a month only, but as I have never colour/heat treated my hair before, I am able to see the difference already.
I do have a small (probably ridiculous) question.
I have waist to hip length hair (low porosity, medium thickness, 2b-2c I think) which I can’t leave open, untied all the time (work meetings, household work etc). And I have noticed that whenever I do put on a scrunchie/pony, the top part (from scalp to ear, where I have tied) goes flat. And more importantly turns more dry and frizzy. The ends maintain the clumps and moisture though. This doesn’t happen when I leave it open, the curls on top remain intact and pretty because of the lack of tension,I guess. Any advise on why this could be happening?

PS: Apologies if you have already answered this question previously!

I face the same issue too Athira 🙂 It’s because curly hair is very malleable and will succumb to any force applied on it

It’s good to know that it’s normal and I am not doing anything wrong (except, maybe try to tie my hair up
less) 😄 Thanks, Anjana!

Oops, I think I replied to a previous post instead of posting a new comment! Forgive my technology challenged brain!

Hey, Just wanted to ask you that while air drying hair, do you tie it up or something or leave it open itself? Cause I have found that when I tie my immediately wet hair (after styling) into a pineapple, once my hair is dry, there is alot of definition but when I leave it open and dry, the frizz increases and curls break alot. But isn’t tying up the wet hair really bad for the hair?

I leave it open Nivedhya, but I don’t see why tying up would be bad if you have no issues with it

Alrightt thankyouu

Hey Anjana,
I have recently started my curly hair journey and was comparing the drying methods – Curl Friendly and my previous method ( where I would towel dry my hair which included rubbing my head with the towel) I was strictly raised with the notion that water and/or wetness on the head/scalp after a wash is most undesirable and can cause serious health issues. (Is this even true?) However, while following the curly girl way, I notice that it takes 2-3 hrs for my head/scalp to dry out completely when air dried. Is this healthy? Meaning is it healthy for the scalp to be wet for this long?
I understand that we need a certain amount of moisture on the hair for the products to work but am worried about the wet scalp. Please do correct me if I am wrong.

Hi Priya, unless you see some issues like catching a cold or so due to your scalp being wet, there is no issue

Alright thankyou!

Alright thankyou!

Hi Anjana!
Have been binge reading your blog as soon as I stumbled into it while searching for curl routines. It is super helpful because it is so detailed. Thank you for creating it!
I have been following the CGM for 2 months now. There is so much information on products that I’m still lost. I have been using the Giovanni smooth as silk shampoo and conditioner which is working well for me. I am also doing STC with the same conditioner. The Ashba gel is causing frizz. I have also been deep conditioning once a week using Mama earth onion hair mask. Also using hemp seed oil for pre-poo. I have been using the denman brush to style and sleeping with a satin bonnet.
My hair type is 2c-3a with medium to high porosity. Can you please suggest which cream, leave-in and gel i should use? I am not understanding how to balance protein for my styling products. Please please help. I stay in India and am open to buying slightly expensive but good foreign brands that are now available in India too.

Hi anjana.. really nice to find your blog.. am a beginner to cgm.. has been only a week.. hadnt seen any good curls… its disorganized and too frizzy.. frizz hair stands all my crown.. but still am gonna try for sometime.. my hair feels so dry and scalp got oily.. what are the best prepoo for this kind of dry and hair and oily scalp?

Hi Kamala, 1 week is a very very short time! Be patient and stick with the routine. The routine and products are what will give you definition and moisture, not oils.

Hi anjana, I have started loosing lot of hair after starting cgm. I have got wow apple cider vinegar shampoo, Pantene advanced clean for clarifying, requil for conditioning , curl up defining cream and mama earth argan hair mask, loreal gel from your recommendations. I am suffering with dandruff and hair loss.. am not sure if the combinations are good or not. Am not sure if I am using too much protein on hair. I replaced conditioner with matrix biology cg friendly. I am skeptical about wow apple cider vinegar shampoo as well for the hair fall. Please do advise me good combination of products. Mine is 2c hair type I think. Also another clarifying shampoo for dandruff because I feel Pantene isn’t clarifying my scalp. Also I want fragrance free products as my nose is sensitive to fragrances.

Hi! I have high porosity hair. I need a cg friendly protein free shampoo! Please Reccomended something budget friendly

Check this Shikha Soul tree

hi Anjana! I have 2b/2c curls and i’ve been following cg method for quite a sometime now. But recently i am suffering from dandruff and i looked online where i came to know that not brushing your hair enough will lead to the settling of sebum on your scalp leading to dandruff which otherwise when you brush will lead to the distribution of oil from you scalp to the ends and thereby preventing the settling of sebum on your scalp. What do you think about this as while following cg method we brush our hair only when its wet? Please help me out

Hi Rithika, ya that may be true. But there are several other ways to combat dandruff https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/flaky-scalp-dandruff-dry-scalp-products-remedies/

Hi Anjana! I’ve been following the CG method for 3 months now and I realized that my hair ( type 3b curls) gets extremely dry even after conditioning it. I apply a palmful of conditioner. I use the Re’equil conditioner that you recommended but I think it isn’t providing my hair with enough moisture. Do you have any suggestions for other conditioners? Also, I have never done deep conditioning before. Could that possibly be causing the problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Devi, what styling products and leave in do you use?

For leave in I use the Re’equil conditioner but I don’t use any styling products

Hi Devi, please include a gel too

I was actually thinking of buying Shea Moisture’s curl enhancing smoothie. Will that be sufficient or should I get other gels?

Give it a go, and if it doesn’t help, add in a a gel

Aqua, Sodium C14 Olefin Sulfonate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Cocyl Glycinate, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Cocamide MEA, Amodimethicone, Trideceth-12, Caffeine, Polyquaternium-10, Polyquaternium-7, Polyquaternium-73, Citric Acid, Disodium EDTA, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, DMDM Hydantoin, Perfume, CI 17200, CI 42090

Are these ingredients okay in a clarifying shampoo for strong build up?

If no, can you suggest some good chelating shampoos available in India?

Yes thanks, the issue is i need a shampoo for hard water and the ones meant for that are either sold out or are really expensive, it would be great if you could mention some more options. Thank you ❤️

Hey Anjana , I use a DIY shampoo with dried forms of Shikakai , Reetha , Amla and fenugreek seeds.
It has worked great for me by reducing my frizz ,improving my volume ,and even reducing dandruff.
Can I continue using this regularly after pre-oiling and
Is it effective in removing the buildup of my cg friendly conditioner and gel in a long term ?

Yes you can use it, just make sure to clarify your hair once in a while – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/clarifying-curly-hair-what-when-and-how/

hi there , i am new to cgm . everything was going on fine since i started this routine. but in the last 2 washes my curls are stretched out , not holding at all , not even day 1 after wash, it is very very soft and smooth. i did the stretch test and it would elongate forever. so i concluded that i might need clarifying. i clarified then used shea moisture manuka honey protein treatment , rinsed it off . my hair just slightly better and again the curls did not hold at all. i am so worried and i dont know what to do . would love hear your advise …. feel so defeated .

Hello! I love your website and your hair even more! May I just ask if you use ACV rinse (or anything similar)? I love how my hair looks and feels after a rinse and was wondering if I could do that for each wash? I currently wash my hair everyday (gasp! Yeah I know, but I can’t stand the greasy feeling if I go a day without washing) but I’m hoping to cut down in the future.

*sorry accidentally hijacked a comment thread!

By the way the ACV rinse I use is Yves Rocher Rinsing Vinegar

I have been trying to get my hair back to normal after horrible bob style layered haircut in 2019. Since then my waves are sort of weird and my hairs curls, but not all of it. As the bottom half of my bottom layers are stick straight. How can I work to fix this? Currently, I use curl talk shampoo and conditioner while washing my hair. I did try the whole squish to condition, but when my hair dries the my bottom layers of hair are curly at the top and bottom half is still stick straight. Because of this I have been trying to use mixed chicks leave-in. Any advice?

Hello Anjana, after reading your blog I felt like yes, my curls can also be beautiful. After reading your entire blog, I start my CG journey this week.
As you suggested I took Enliven raspberry and red apple conditioner, Kayos Hair gel…
But I didn’t get an idea of when to apply the gel.
On the water dripping hair or on wet hair.
Can you please help me out with this.

Hi Chaithanya, have you seen my curly hair routine video – https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com/my-curly-hair-routine/

Hi, when I shower I scrunch up my hair with a cream and when it drys it looks really wavy and nice! But when I go to sleep and wake up in the morning, all the waves are gone and my hair looks so frizzy and mess :(( How do I stop this from happening?

Hi Ashmita, how do you protect your curls while sleeping? Do you use a gel for hold?

No, I don’t use any gel. I just go to sleep with my hair down

Hi Anjana,
I have started CG for 6 months now after reading all your useful articles. Thank you so much for being there for all of us out here.
My hair was responding really well until a few weeks back. And then I started researching again and realized my hair must be rich in protein now and that’s the reason for the lack of definition in my curls also my hair is thick and strong but snaps under tension. I realized my hair needs protein detox for a while now.
can you please help me with the right cleansing shampoo in India and also if I should avoid gels and deep conditioners for a while now.
My hair is this but frizzy and rough as of now ..

Hi Apeksha, A shampoo will not remove the protein instantly. You just need to keep focusing on protein free products and do lots of deep conditioning.
