Curly Hair Care & Products to Use According to the Weather - image 1570450056468 on https://www.curlsandbeautydiary.com

Most of my curly hair journey, post understanding my hair, was in Mysore and Bangalore, both of which have very good weathers. They are neither too humid nor are they too dry. They are neither too hot, nor are they too cold. So I always had amazing wash days using most leave ins and gels. The weather is just right for the best looking curls.

My hometown is in Kerala, which is very humid most of the year around. Whenever I visited Kerala, my hair would start behaving weirdly – it would go puffy, limp, flat and straight.
A year ago, I moved to the Netherlands and that was a whole different story. The dry, cold weather made my hair rigid, crispy, frizzy and lifeless.

Bottom line is that too little humidity in the air causes hair to lose moisture to the drier air. Too much humidity in the air causes hair to absorb all that moisture and get frizzy and undefined.

Having spent considerable time in all these places with varied weathers, I have more or less figured the kind of products and ingredients to use, and the kind to avoid.

There are various articles with dew points as the reference, which are a great resource for those wanting to know more about how weather impacts your hair.

  • Dewpoint below 10°C (50°F ) – Dry Weather
  • Dewpoint between 10-15°C (50-59°F) – Comfortable Weather
  • Dewpoint above 15°C (60°F) – Humid Weather

I have found them to sometimes not work for me for 2 reasons –

  1. During the warmer summer months here in the Netherlands, with a comfortable dew point, I’ve noticed that I still cannot use gels like I used to back in India.
  2. Dew point can vary considerably within a day, so it is difficult to base a wash day depending on that.

What I’ve figured is, it is best to look at the general climate of the place over a period of months or weeks and pick products accordingly. Instead of going by numbers of dew points or humidity, go by how your hair responds or generally by how you yourself feel about the weather. For eg. Netherlands is mainly cold and dry – so my routine is majorly the one for cold and dry weathers (even if it rains for a few days in between). Kerala is quite hot and humid – so my routine is majorly for humid weather even if there’s a dry day every now and then.

Curly Hair Care & Products to use for Humid Weathers

Hair tends to go puffy, limp, flat and looser because of absorbing moisture from the air.

Left – Used only a cream. Resulted in elongated, lack-lustre, puffy hair. Right – Used only a gel. Resulted in tight, defined, shiny curls.

1. Use a good hard hold gel. Use a good hard hold gel with strong polymers like VP/VA copolymer, Polyquats etc. Check this for more such polymers – Ingredients to Look for in a Hair Gel. Look for products without glycerin, propylene glycol and sorbitol, as they can absorb too much moisture from the hair.

2. Skip using a leave in. If you must use one, look for glycerin, propylene glycol and sorbitol free products.

3. Don’t leave in your rinse out conditioner in your hair.

Rinse it off completely. I wouldn’t worry about glycerin in your rinse out conditioner as long as you rinse it out completely.

Left – Used only a gel. Resulted in crispy, unruly curls with no definition. Right – Used only a cream. Resulted in well defined, soft curls.

1. Use a good quantity of leave in conditioner. Look for glycerin, propylene glycol and sorbitol free products as they can suck out moisture from your hair.

I wouldn’t worry about glycerin in your rinse out conditioner as long as you rinse it out completely before applying the leave in.

2. Skip using a gel.

If you must use one, look for ones with film formers like Flaxseed, Aloe Vera, Marshmallow Root etc and avoid polymers like PVP, VP/VA copolymer, Polyquats etc.

3. Deep condition whenever possible

Used both cream and gel

When the weather is neither too dry nor too humid, go Crazy! Haha, but seriously – you can experiment with many products and combinations. Try using both a leave in and gel. Try using just a leave in. Try using just a gel. See what you like best. Glycerin shouldn’t be a concern 🙂

Hi Anjana,

I’ve been using camille rose naturals coconut milk and aloe Vera moisture Mac conditioner along with Shea moisture frizz free defense styling gel-cream. Before that I used wow conditioner along with L’Oréal Homme strong hold gel and cantu Shea butter.

I still can’t seem to tame my frizz, since it’s really humid in gangtok, any other combinations could use? Or switch in my current routine?
Suggestions would really help

Thank you
Samhita

I even use Ors humidity control hair serum occasionally

Skip the leave in and use only the Homme gel, Samhita

Having trouble with the 2b on the top of my head and crown. Have you come across ECO styler argan oil gel and ECO natural curl cocktail. It is claimed to have lots of hold but can’t find anyone who used it on wavy type 2b-c hair.

I haven’t tried that Marsha

After checking every single ingredient I decided I’ll stick with the homemade Flaxseed gel and add from there.

Hey Anjana,
I just have a few questions !!
Whatever I do , my hair is not moisturized
The curls are defined but they look dry and there are some frizzy hair around the curls and on the crown.
I live in Germany. I use cantu curl cream and custard.
I am confused as to what to do !!!

Great post! These are some wonderful tips and suggestions.

Thanks for sharing it. have a good day.

This really helped alot to understand why one of my leave in conditioners behaved as it did. It is now dry and cold in Sweden and after my co-wash I used As I am Coconut leave in and followed up with my homemade flaxseed gel. Perfect!! Type 2 curls in a country where most have straight hair and the stores are full of CG non-friendly shampoos and conditioners. Thank heavens for internet shops.
Love your Blogg great help on my new curly life.

I am glad to hear that, Marsha!

Can’t I directly use cantu curl activator on dry hair?

Applying cantu curl activator on dry hair may cause it to look very greasy. But it’s worth a try 🙂

Anjana dear I m Soo thankful to you… I m from Kerala … 2c 3a curls and low porosity hair… Trying hard to bring our my curls… My hair seems to be dry and frizzy so I don’t want to skip using leav in…I do have arata hair cream and gel.. also an ashba leav in and gel

Anjana this post is something i desperately needed! I live in a super humid place (Singapore with dew point 75). After reading this i realised i have been styling my hair all wrong. I was using leave in conditioners with glycerine and also leaving in my conditioner. I used gel only and my hair is better. But the gel i am currently using is ashba botanics and has glycerin. Will try arata or fixmycurl gel for better definition. Thanks a ton for this post 🙂

I am glad to hear that Binita!

Hi Anjana

Is it possible to have wavy frizz free hair instead of curly hair by altering the amount of leave in and gel used ? I mean can I style my hair to look wavy instead of curly ?

Hurupama, there are some tricks like using more styling products, using heavier products, not scrunching, not diffusing. But these will work only if your hair is not very curly.

Hi Anjana,
thank you for this helpful post! I also live in The Netherlands and find it cold, but very windy and wet as well. I am currently using Blueberry bliss leave in and the Action Hegron gel, but they don’t seem to be doing the trick. Do you have any suggestions for products you can find in Dutch stores? Thank you so much!

Hi Julie, I don’t use drugstore styling products so wouldn’t be able to suggest any 🙁

What about hot and dry climate like Rajasthan? Is glycerine ok?
I am not sure.

No Srishti

Hi,

I live in Mumbai and I am trying to find the right products for the monsoon season. I have high porosity 2c hair.

I read this post and bought the Blueberry Bliss curl control jelly. But to my surprise, Sorbitol is second on the ingredient list.

Did you miss this fact while recommending? Or has the ingredient list changed?

Hi Niketa, thanks for pointing this out. Either the ingredients list changed or I must have looked at an incomplete ingredients list. I have removed it from the list.

Hey dearie. Thank you so much for the detailed post. I was using biolage hydrasource conditioner. Though i rinse it completely but still my hair didnt adjust to it. So i stopped using it. Can you please tell me if skipping conditioner completely is ok. Although i sometimes use diy hairmask also please do suggest a shampoo for humid places. I am at present using giovanni tea tree. Will that do?
One last ques, i how ofter should we clarify in humid places?
Thank you

  • I wouldn’t recommend skipping conditioner completely.
  • Any shampoo will do.

    For India’s humid weather?

    Hi Anjana,
Thanks a ton for this post. I have a question. Do you recommend using a diffuser in hot humid weather?

    Hi Varsha, ya why not?

    Hi Anjana.
Have u considered the FIX MY CURLS Quenching Dou for Kerala’s humid weather??
I jus moved in from Bangalore and Hair definitely is missing Bangalore already….
It’s been over a week and am yet to get few thngs right .
Arata Definately is a YES, and I ws hoping if u cud check out FMC range as well as Ashba, though it’s not completely glycerin free but many r vouching as Good for Kerala’s wether.

Hey Aysha, I am yet to try the Quenching range. Ashba gel is great in Kerala weather 🙂

    Hi Anjana,
After reading your blog, I was going to buy the Arata gel. However the ingredient list mentions glycerine. Is that fine?

    Fine for what Reema?

Hi Anjana, sorry for not being clear. I live in a very humid place and am new to the CGM. It’s been rather overwhelming so far. I’ve bought full size products that don’t seem to work for me and needed to try another hair gel. Came across your post and was planning to buy the Arata gel (the ingredient list mentions Glycerine so wondering if the formulation has changed since this post). Would you still recommend it for humid weather or is it avoidable? Thanks

I would avoid glycerine esp. if you are just starting out

I looked at the Arata cream and gel and they both list Glycerin? Have they changed the product since you wrote this, or am I misunderstanding the ingredient list?

Hi Naveen, yes they’ve changed the formulation. I’ve removed Arata products from this post. Thanks.
